Yeap. Setup wrong, or faulty. Prove it was faulty and not setup wrong. There is pretty much no way you can prove that.

Holden will most likely not budge, and personally, i see no reason for them too. The roofracks were supplied by them yes, but they were not fitted by them. There is no warranty to cover things not being properly installed or fitted by an outside party. It's like saying, holden should cover the warranty on the car if a tree falls on the car and damages it. Outside holdens control, outside holdens responsibility.

But the tree wasn't sold from Holden, it's not a car accessory, irrelevance!
If you bought rims put them on your self and they all cracked, if you bought a light bulb and it didn't work, if you bought a harness and it didn't work, if you bought an a seat that wouldn't adjust, catch my drift?

Similar thing happened to me. Cruising down the M1 with brand new surfboard on roof racks and the whole lot just tore off - including the black strips. Lucky not to kill someone. They were Holden racks on 2013 Calais - came with the car - bought from Holden dealership about 6 months ago. I took it back to the dealership, they inspected it and told me that I must have tampered with them, not their problem, even though I have an extended warranty....?!

I've fitted genuine racks myself and used them on my wagon a few times, I honestly dont see how they can come off so easily. They seemed somewhat solid to me, they actually anchor down into the steel part of the roof, not just the black plastic strips. Is it possible people are only anchoring them to the plastic? surely not?

I know this is a few years old but to compare a tree falling on a car to an item sold by Holden for the owner to install and remove as they wish is just stupid. There are only two options 1 they were not fitted right by owner or 2 there's a design fault.

I guess its possible but its a really easy install, seems to me would be pretty hard to stuff it up.

DO NOT USE ROOF RACKS ON VE COMMODORE WAGONS- THEY ARE DANGEROUS AND THE TRACKS ON THE ROOF ARE INSUFFICIENT- EXTREMELY POOR DESIGN BY HOLDEN=THIS CAR SHOULD BE RECALLED SPECIFICALLY JUST FOR THIS----SEE MY PICS-Gidday mate, recently bought a 2012 commodore omega sportwagon in the hope I could use it to do SMALL odd jobs with and carry the gang in comfort. what a mistake...I purchased a set of GENUINE holden roof racks, the load rating for the use of the racks on this car said 75kilos max, I fitted the racks exactly how the manual says..EXACTLY...(my background is over 25 years working on vehicles, transmission specialist, drag car builder, servicing and tuning vehicles) I put a fibreglass ladder on top- which probably weighs 8 kilos..went to tighten the rope by simply pulling up on it and just about ripped the roof racks along with the bloody strips on the roof clean off-I haven't worked out how to add pics to this forum yet but feel free to send me your email address and I will send you the pics--the bloody strips are held on by little metal clips- it (these little tin strips)are not sufficient to carry ANYTHING let along put racks on them and try to tie something down----be warned, this is dangerous, I am going to book my car into holedn next week to see what they say when I demonstrate how I can rick the roof racks off with the roof strip. Todays date 7-6-14, will let u know how I go, extremely disappointed.
I bought a VF Sports wagon, one of the last to roll off the production line. I had it factory fitted with tow bar roof racks and cargo barrier. I bought a new single matters today. I tied it to the roof rack with 2 strong ocky straps at each end. I left Springwood and got back onto the Great western highway. I had just got up to about 80Kmh when I heard something snap. I immediately though it was an ocky strap. (Can't trust those things, that's why I use 2) so I pulled over. When I looked I could see that the metal strip that attaches the roof rack to the car had pulled out of the metal channel in the body of the car. Maybe I should have called Holden roadside service (because I'm covered) but I didn't. I didn't want to get stuck on the side of the road for hours. It was lucky it was the drivers side that had come free so I got another ocky strip, rap that around the roof rack. I had the 2 ends come down through my open window so I could hold it down as I drove along. It wasn't that hard to hold it down as I drove along at about 70 Km. I did get hit with a sudden cross wind that jerked on the straps but it wasn't that hard. Maybe it was that that did it. Anyway I made it to Lawson. (Silly now I thing about it)

I've gone cruising down the M4 at a 110 Kmh with a long extension ladder tied to those roof racks. Imagine the carnage if it had of come off.

I've just had a close look at that metal strip, the only thing holding to the car are small plastic clips. It really does look like a very bad design.
I agree with you It is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, an accident waiting to happen.

It's a pitty I can't attach a photo because you would see just how pathetic they. The locking tab that holds the rack to the vehicle would fit between the claws of an ant eater on the 5 cent coin.
