I have a rounded off sump plug and tried many things to get it off and am left with a few options. One is to replace my sump and the other is to drill and use a tap and die set on the original sump plug. I have also seen the idea of welding a nut onto the sump plug and using a breaker bar. Does anyone know if it is safe to weld a nut onto my sump plug?

Weld a nut on
Hammer a smaller socket on
Use a set of Stilsons

They're your options without driling or removing the sump

you can try drilling and using an easy out to remove it......heating it with an oxy set then undoing with vice grips.....weld on a nut and undo it..... but its unusual for a sump plug to be so tight as to round off unless you or previous owner used a shifter aka adjustable wrench on the poor thing.......correct tool for the correct job people

yip , bursons is cheap around 6 bucks , i've been there myself and worked out why they round off , most new socket sets have many teeth , the best way is get ya self a 6 sided socket. I would use a cold chisel and hammer, or try Pipe Wrench

Welding is the last resort.

ok Thanks, I will be cautious on it, just didn't know if the thing would catch fire and blow up or something.

Wouldn't arc weld anywhere on an engine unless you know what you're doing.
You risk blowing the ECU.
