I do a lot of thinking, a lot of thinking goes into wat project I can afford to do. I'm still doing my VH, but I'm just curious if in another project I put a V6 in, apparently the tailshaft has to be shortened 2".

Who would I see about getting one shortened, and how much does it roughly cost to get done?

If I come across a cheap VN I might get it so we can do the conversion in the wagon, then later on down the track once we finish it, put everything into one of our cars for a daily.

I did mine myself. You can get a local engineering shop to modify one for you or look for a place that recos CV joints. I have info on my site how I did mine.

I had to shorten mine by about 40mm.

cheers

Ahh ok, so to shorten the tailshaft u take the flange off the end, shorten the end then press and weld the flange back on? I thought ya just cut a chunk out the middle and weld it back together haha.

Also, while we're on the subject of shortening things...how are axles shortened? I've been curious about that as well. Do ya cut wats required off the spline end, then re-spline it? If so, where would I go to get an axle resplined?

Thx heaps for ur help mate. Also, did ya get my PM bout ur intake?

Cheers.

Hey, i've done the V6 conversion myself and for a tail shaft you will need to get a V8 tail shaft but depending on wot diff you use also, if you run the standard salisbury diff that is in the VH's you will need a V8 tail shaft from a VB-VK V8 but if you plan on useing a borg warner diff for example VL Turbo you will need a VK series 2 or VL V8 shaft and you then split the shaft at the CV and also split the VN V6 shaft and use the front half of the VN shaft along with the rear half of the VL V8 shaft and it will be just rite for the job an you wont have to worry about it breaking where you have re-welded your old shaft.

VR s2 Acclaim/VK IS GONE :(
I have been told that you can only do it with an auto because the manual sits in a different spot and you would have to cut a new hole for the shifter? I have been told all my V6 conversion info by a drunk and stoned mate so most of its prob wrong lol.

BT50............ while the vk is rebuilt
The way i did mine was to use the complete VN tailshaft. I keep the VK diff and had the end of the VN shaft shortened and the VK uni's fitted.
I had this done by a fitter and turner that specialise in drive shafts.

As for having to cut a new hole in the tunnel for manual boxes, not true. Just added an adapter plate which moves the shift forward inside the car , see pic's below

You don't need to use a V8 tailshaft. The VN one bolts straight in.

Thx heaps for the help guys.

So if I put a V6 in, with a 5 speed behind it (I love manuals), I'd need to use the front of the t5 tailshaft, and the rear from a VK which is runnin a borgy (as i'd be running a borgy diff)? I'd only run a borgy now, have broken 2 salisbury 8 bolts behind my 173 5 spd so a 3.8 5spd I wouldn't even bother with a small salisbury.

So the way I see it, this is wat I'd need, please let me know if I'm wring about anything...

- 3.8 Kframe (including everything like struts, wishbones, radius rods)
- 3.8 V6
- T5
- Custom crossmember
- Front half of T5 tailshaft
- Rear half of VK Borgy tailshaft
- VL or VK Borgy diff

All that will work with each other in a VH aye? All bolt up good?
When I eventually start the project, my first goal is to get everything bolted up in....then I can work on the fuel, electrical and cooling system.

Cheers.

hey mate just buy a vn/vp wreak there so cheap! and u will then have all the gear: radiator fan wirring computer fuel tank etc... when your finished with the wreak call a scrap metal joint and they should take it for nothing or maybe even pay you, and you can also then get some money back on parts u dont need doors trims and interior etc.. keep the old commodores alive!:)
