hey,

at around 80 km/h my vl vibrates like **** and its really bloody annoying. auto gearbox. I went to the mech. near by and he said its somehting to do with the tailshaft and to fix it I gotta take it to a auto box specialist. he said to stop it for the moment was to drive around with the power button on. will this stuff the box up or what? plus does it chew more fuel. I've cruised aorund for about 2 months with the power button but now i jut drive it normalyy and it still does it. i got no cash to get it fixed yet. anyone no how much to get it fixed or have the same problem???

thanks,
Matt. :b:

have a look at the following -

1. steering rack
2. springs/shocks
3. strut ball joints
4. the transmission support bracket under the car (this is a big rubbery thing on a crossmember at the back of the tranny, they melt and disintegrate)
5. centre bearing (these are notorious for dying)
6. unis

ive just been thru this with my VK...pain in the arse, normally if the tranny is stuffed, it will make a constant noise

ok, here we go

this happend to my vl, it's been covered before by other members. you need to get under the car, and locate the torque converter clutch circuit, it's a plug connected into the bell housing. i cant for the love of god remember where it is, but it is on the bell housing im sure. ask the moderator oslo60, he's up to date with the rb stuff, im sure he will know where it is, by disconecting this you are removing the torque converter clutch out of the equastion.

long term affects, well, the worst it will do is kill your torque converter, but this will happen in 6 month's to 1 yera's time, yoru torque conveter is already buggered, so i wouldnt realy worry to much there, cost wise, looking at around $300 to get your converter cracked open, and sorted out, if you remove it your self, it's less ofcourse

from what you have descriped, it could be that

cheers

As Garth said it could be a faulty lock up clutch in the torque convertor. If it is the problem that sound/vibration would be the lock up clutch slipping when it's trying to engage. Leaving it that way can lead to the plate breaking down and feeding the transmission pieces of metal. That's why the mechanic told you to drive on power mode which is overdrive cancelled (no forth gear), so he was on the right track. ;)

A better way to go is to physically unplug the overdrive cancel solinoid from the bellhousing. If you manage to get under the car, check out the left hand side of the bellhousing, you'll see a wiring harness and lone connector. Just unplug it and tape it up somewhere so it isn't swinging around.

It shouldn't do any harm aside from a little higher revs on the highway and slightly worse fuel consumption but you've been driving it the same way if you've only been using power so it should be no different.

OR

It could simply be your uni's as mentioned above, when overdrive engages the revs drop causing the tailshaft to spin slower. Making the vibration more noticeable.

Take it to an auto specialist and see what they say

G'luck

Yes sounds like what my sisster car was like when she got her VL years back it was her centre uni it's common for these to go another thing to check as well.

Sounds like the centre bearing or the 'CV' joint thats located close by. I recently had exactly the same fault with my Calais V8. Pulled the tailshaft, swapped the bearing and cleaned and repacked the CV joint. It took about 3 hrs and was really messy, but the only noise i can hear is that of the motor. Can't beat the V8 sound!
