Have a quick(safe) sniff of your air con refrigerent and oil. Do this by gently pressing your valve where they re gas it. If theres no pressure, undo a fitting somewhere and sniff that. Remember that smell and then compare that smell to the one of that coming through your vents.
My stato had an almighty stench coming from the vents. This was leaking refrigerent in the heater box and basically required me to pull the whole dash apart and remove the evaporator as it was leaking and not holding any pressure.
