my understanding of the power button(limited) was that it simply makes the car drop a gear, so you can get more power for going up a hill or overtaking at higher speeds...?

yep pretty much its to 'protect the auto when cold' same as the R31 autos and yep the are the same autos untill the series 3 R31 they dont do that

its an overdrive button
and as stated above (Sus230) is what is is used for
as well as towing.

Not so much as protecting the auto when cold, cos it does not engage untill the box is warm.
