Being a new head unit i would think that the newer steering wheel would work better than the older one. Am i right in my thinking?

I dont think it will matter, im pretty sure you will still need the PAC unit to convert the signal from the controls to something that can be understood by the radio

another quick question, has anyone ever tried fitting a late model auto shifter to a older car? eg a vx or vz onto a vr? VZ Calais Auto shifter, boot, surround with linkage and A/S+PWR buttons | eBay this just caught my eye and was wandering what would be involved to fit it

I remember someone else attempting this. I think you will run into problems with the ratchet setup, where the vr/vs shifters button goes up and the later model shifter button goes down
