For the life of me I can't even work out where the photos are being taken o_O
Is it the front of the engine or the side?

That is just dried coolant, and may look like a head gasket failure. I have the same on mine and it looks to be the water pump or inlet gasket.

Do you have any symptoms?

Thermostat is at rear of engine and a pain in the backside to access.
You can lie on top of the engine after taking everything out and get your hands into a little space to work or lift it on a hoist and take out the transmission and then it is a easy job.
The choice is yours.

Yes. Also have to remove a bit more to get to them.
