My income was under the tax-free threshold so I pay no tax hence no tax return.

In 2005 I got a frigging huge tax return of about $3000 (started full time employment mid-FY and used my car for work - at 600km a week...). Used a bit of it to have a shopping spree, saved the rest.

soon as i get mine back i'm buying new bearings, rings, Crane 276 cam, gasket kit, spare bonnet (for a big hole), and finally getting my 304 running again, I submitted mine wednesday with e-tax so hope its not far away
its sadens me to see a brand new carby, intake, dizzy, exhaust sitting on the floor in my garage just waiting for some cash
plus using the tax return to finish fencing my property and getting a rescue dog can't wait!

But wouldn't you have paid tax, thus, you need to file a return to get your tax back?

If you are self employed or drawing a wage from savings, then no.
