Looks like a nice clean base to start with mate. My best mate has a 4.2 TD Patrol and his old man has a white 2.8 GU like yours. Last year they did a trip through the canning stock route, one of the most remote tracks in australia. The 2.8 GU had nearly 300,000 clicks on it before they left and it did the trip without missing a beat and did everything the 4.2 did.
I have driven both and you can most definitely notice the power difference, but that being said, with a few bolt on mods the 2.8 really livens up.
Can't wait to keep an eye on this mate.

thats awesome to hear as i am doing simpson desert next year (if i dont upgrade before then)

Firstly, I must say I'm jealous. I'd almost trade my commodore for this as a daily...!

Back to topic. It's not what I'd call common, however cracked heads was one of the
only engine faults we saw that wasn't necessarily maintenance related. Obviously
not changing the coolant regularly can contribute, but it didn't always seem to be
the case. So if there's any sign of dirt/muck/etc in the radiator, give it a good flush.
Even consider throwing a thermostat and water pump just for peace of mind if no
proof they've been replaced recently.
The signs were simply the vehicles losing power, showing high to hot on the gauge,
and steam from under the bonnet. The result was generally the same. Replace head.
This was at two different Nissan dealerships, over several years. Don't seem to be a
common car around where I live now - or they just don't come to us. Lol
Try a few steep hills too, they usually get hot really quick under load if there is
any fault at all :)

thanks mate! :)

it gets up to temp and sits there fine!!
i checked the coolant it seemed pretty good (although he did just flush it prior to me buying it-well he did all the filters oils and coolant etc)

but seems fine under load blows a little smoke but only sometimes (rarely)

but my first problem with it i have found so far is the starter motor!
i let the glow plug light switch off.. go to start it and if its cold it cranks for a while before actually starting.. should i replace it?

new clutch going in soon!

exedy safari tuff clutch, i need to work out if its a dual mass flywheel or a single mass fly wheel..
they were factory DMF from standard, but apparently most people changed them when they did the clutches.. so when i get it home on sunday i can get under and have a look

can anyone tell me how i can tell what is what? lol

i can get the clutch kits in:

Exedy safari tuff clutch kit for DMF
Exedy safari tuff clutch kit for SMF
or
Exedy safari tuff clutch kit including SMF

are the singles better? i dont think i can afford to change it to single at this point in time....

High pressure hosing isnt always the best idea. I know on snatch straps they say dont pressure wash them because it can force particles of dirt into the weave which may cut the fibres. Just a thought ;)
