As far as I understand it is not replaced as part of any scheduled service.

Yeh generally most cars have them replaced at 100ks. I did mine at 120ks.

I think you might be confusing timing chains for timing belts. Belts are a scheduled replacement item on overhead cam engines as they are just reinforced rubber bands but timing chains are an internal, lubricated component that last much longer. They don't have scheduled replacements.

Yeah I've never heard of replacing a timing chain as part of maintenence. Only done when/if it shits itself.

yep, ive asked my mechanic a number of times and he assures me the timing chain on my VYII v6 isn't really a item that needs changing or maintainance. The timing belt on the other hand in my other 4cyl car needs changing every 90-100,000ks.

Appears to be a lot of folks who confuse timing belts with the far superior steel timing chains found in the Ecotec and many/most of the old Holden engines. My 2003 VYII Berlina is fast approaching 420,000Kms. I'm considering replacing the timing chain, gear set and tensioner simply because its done a hell of a lot of work and I'd reckon by now the tensioner must be close to end of useful life (if not past it).
I would appreciate comment however on best brands of chain to use. Cloyes & Rollermaster appear to feature widely. Preferences anyone?
