How often should you have TWs calibrated?

I remember a long time ago a member was having issues keeping head gaskets in a VS ecotec with a turbo kit. IIRC eventually they discovered their torque wrench was out by about 1/2 of the actual value required. Some of our long time members might know who I'm referring to.

Mine are probably overdue just due to age rather then actual usage.
That's what I'm wondering about mine. It's only been used 6 or 8 times in 15 years but I've never had it calibrated.

At work, torque wrenches were 'controlled tooling' and calibrated every 6 months.

In a professional environment - yearly.

I probably should have mine all checked too (probably all less than 10 years old).
I was hoping to find a way to test myself and calibrate at home.

Ive tried explaining to people at work that you should turn the tension back to the lowest when not using it.
Even though we only have 1 tension value to go to as a standard.
They look at me like I'm some sort of idiot for suggesting this, or complain that when they find it not already at the setting that its stupid.

Am i in the wrong here or are they all too stubborn and have no mechanical idea?
It effects the calibration over time yeah?

*All my own personal ones i return to the lowest settings when not in use.
Just learned something new and will be going out to the garage this morning to make that happen.

I also learned from all this the myth that you should only use these for achieving the torque. I always used a ratchet and when things get firmed up, I will swap to the torque wrench.

John Cadogan mention that the ratchet part was separate and won’t affect the wrench just by tightening it.

So that is a step forward that makes things easier.

I’ve luckily always used the right hand position on the handle and not held them halfway down the shaft. (That’s what she said)
