G8 GXP
Hello, new here, I have a North American G8 GXP.

I have always set T56 and TR 6060 levels to the fill level on the filler plug.
Until recently I have never seen anything contrary.

I am seeing threads with guys adding an additional .5 l , often through the rev lamp switch hole.
Now I have seen a photo of a Monaro T56 with a production label saying not to remove the fill plug.
Could someone give me more info?
Are there actual Holden instructions in print about this ?

Thanks for any info
Gerry

VEGTS BUILT BLOWN E85
yea just remove it and fill as normal its only there because holden have it as sealed for life oil (same as the diff) best to service both now and then and the gearbox can run better on the penrite pro gear oil also

Cannot comment on the service procedure of the TR6060
The T56 definitely takes 4.4 litres of oil

How I replace my gearbox oil is....
1. Remove the drain plug in the bottom of box first, then remove the filler plug......Because the oil level in the box is above the filler plug and oil will go everywhere if you remove it first.
2. Refit the drain plug in the bottom of the box after the oil has drained
3. Refill the box through the "filler" plug on the side of the gearbox till it starts to run out the hole
4. Refit the "Filler" plug
5. Unplug wiring connected to reverse switch, remove switch and add another 400 to 500mls of oil through the reverse switch hole. The amount of oil added to refill the box should be 4.4 litres in total
6. Refit reverse switch and reconnect wiring plug to switch

As above....Just ignore the "Do Not Remove" sticker located near the filler plug.
They must have expected the transmission to last forever filled with ATF Dextron III

Thanks for the replies.
Now that I look, the 04-06 GTO which is our Monaro, the service manual states exactly as you say.

Funny, this is the only t56 car I can find that they want the level above the standard fill plug.

My G8, which is a VE with a 6060 , same normal fill.
So what made Holden and only Holden spec a higher oil level?

Thanks agian

No idea why Holden specify to add the extra oil through the reverse switch hole

Just found a Tremec T56 service manual online and it states:
"Add lubricant through fill plug opening until lubricant just begins to drip back out of opening"
Here's the link:

T56 MUST have extra oil.. above the usual filler hole
to get rid of the 'rollover' rattle (as Holden called it)
there is a Techline on this dated June 2000 covering the extra
500ml to be added
but
NEVER over fill the later TR6060.. you will blow the seals
(it does not have the noise issues the first T56s did)

Thanks for sharing that info Smitty
I must admit....The first time I serviced a T56 I found it very weird
I still clearly remember thinking to myself after being told about adding the extra oil
"Why the hell am I overfilling this box" and "This goes against everything I was ever taught"
