Good setup?
Yeah sure, EFI 308.

You'll need to bore the 253 30thou to get EFI heads to fit. Then just do everything you'd do to the 308.

As for the 396, Reality is why all the "hating".
Cooling, Side load on the piston skirt and bore wall.
Work needed to be done to the block to make strong enough (cementing water galleries).
After all that, I don't think 383's like to rev all that much, 396's are worse.

355 seems to run better then a 308 did.

If you're already building a 304, just do exactly the same sorta stuff to the 253.

omfg *facepalm* sometimes you guys just dont get it do you :p

Ari

If it was an attempt at humour, it failed. We have a guy who has asked for genuine advice. If he doesn't know, he could end up making a goose of himself following your advice. If it wasn't meant to be humourous, then, yeah, we don't get it.

ok point taken.

now for something useful:

HT and HG holden 253's engine numbers start with a letter, either H or L and are followed by 1001 and up. the H signifies that it is a high comp engine, which has a CR of 9.0:1 power output of 185Bhp@4400rpm. the low comps had 8.0:1 with a power rating of 174 Bhp@4400rpm

HQ 253's have a Q and a letter either R or S S being low comp, r being high comp. the low comps had 8.0:1 174bhp@4400 and the highs had 9.0:1 and 185bhp@4400

HJ, HX, HZ, LX and LH all only had high comp engines (9.0:1)

VB got bumped up a bit to 9.4:1 and made a whopping 117bhp@4000rpm

hope that makes up for my other post.

See, a useful piece of advice would have been to make sure the welds on the chain are strong enough to cope with being dragged along the seabed in strong tides. But then you went and got all technical :(
