Ve gearbox not selecting gears

Hi there i have just bought a 2008 ve calais sports wagon v6 5 speed auto from the auctions
The car has no drive in all ranges . Though engine runs fine. I disconnected the battrie over night and reconnected it again in the morning , then started the engine and it made a grinding type of noise at the back of the engine ( gearbox ) while making the noise it would go into gear and drive about 10/20 feet untill the noise stopped and then the car would not drive in any gear at all .
Would this be a torque conveter failure? Or blocked filter ?

It needs the gearbox out, and a good replace gearbox or the same type installed.
Too easy.

Being a 5 speed that trans is probably toast. Did the car come with a warranty? Because a rebuild is likely your only option these days.

Auction car....The warranty would be the concrete one...

If it's the 5L40 trans, a full rebuild is around the $6k mark.

My wife's 2008 4 speed had a similar issue, turned out to be a loose (very loose) shift linkage bolt on the transmission.

Just 1 possible cause but definitely worth checking before you spend any money.

The 5L40e is a box of dicks. Ours was rebuilt twice in two years. Expensive to rebuild and then few do it well.
