Hello all doing cam, springs etc myself when it comes to doing crank gear and cam gear is dot to dot fine or should it be done with a degree wheel etc, some say either is fine some have a opinion on each way and which is better, never ever done on old engines but these news ls engines well advice would be appreciated cheers.

Degree wheel and adjustable cam gear are good to truly measure cam. If a bigger cam a must to measure piston to valve clearence. I've done a 4 LS1 cam swaps and 2 cams(all were comp cam) were slightly out.
