You can't change just the oil, unfortunately I've been told from Holden that the gearbox has to be removed to change the oil.
If you ask Holden about changing the oil, they will tell you the oil in it is for the life of the gearbox and is an unserviceable item!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I replaced mine in the ute with Penrite MGO 70 which Penrite now call PRO GEAR 70W-75 Full Syn.The boys on JC put me onto it and honestly havent looked back.It comes in 2.5lt bottles and you will need 4.4lt.Drain the original out via the bottom drain plug while its warm, I let mine drain out overnight and then refilled it with 4.4litres thru the reverse light switch using a hand pump which screwed on top of the penrite bottle.Easy to pump unlike heavy gear oil and the difference is amazing, but compared to say a japanese gearbox you would swear the T56 is from your grand fathers tractor
Tinsnips hit the nail on the head with his description of the gearbox
I take it that it is still under warranty, run it past the service guys next and see what they reccomend you do,but dont expect them to put anything other than the DEX111 in it ,even if you give them an alternative fluid supplied by you.If you dont feel confident in doing the job ring around and get quotes from a workshop that specializes in manual gearbox,s.
I,msure there are quite a few boys on here down your way who could give you the thumbs up on a few good specialist and reccomend their work, and short shifting wont do any harm,I sometimes go from 1st,3rd,5th with no labouring what so ever, its amazing the torque these 6lt engines put out
Cheers mate

Cheers mate, lots of great info in there. Really appreciate the help. I'll check around and see what the word is on the place to go. Chances are the holden guys wont help but i will run it by them.

When changing down gears, bring the engine revs up with the pedal and don't rely on the clutch to do it for you. If you drive it like a non synchro box you might find they slot in a lot smoother. To work out the revs that you should bring the engine up to, do a few changes without using the clutch, you will soon find the rev range where it slides into gear without the clutch, then just bring the revs up to that range when using the clutch, or harden up and don't use the clutch at all anymore ;)

thats a crock of poo....

there is a clear simple article in the genuine Holden VE service manual on how to do it (same call for the diff oil too..it is replacable)

oh...and FWIW the short stubby 'alloy' shifter Holden put on ..is no help in shifting the 6 speed!
hard to grip, slippery (and the fake alloy gets VERY hot in the sun) rough uncomfortable stitching
it looks good but really is a crap gear knob.

I ditched the original on mine and stuck the plain plastic knob off a previous SS on mine...shifting is easier, the knob is not slippery
and I don't get my hand burnt when the car has been sitting in the sun all day.

I also have no problems shifting the 6 speed in mine..into any gear all smooth (but the car has now done 16000kms)

^ this.

I've never found anything conclusive about the T6060 finding it's way down from the HSVs to the SS/SSVs.

my car has always been a bit stiff getting into 2nd gear when cold. i changed the gear oil from the atf to penrite gear oil it improved a bit.

i usually just go from 1st to 3rd for the first few changes, then it id fine.

Well ive been driving her for a week now. Update: all gear changes are now smooth, found the sweet spot. Havent quite got down gearing yet but i am close to working it out. Pretty much dont need to go down to second unless its a T junction.

Took off from the lights in 3rd yesterday..... Easy as.
