Hi guys,

Not sure if you've heard any similar noises but since I've had the car (few weeks) I've heard a strange clunk coming from under the front of the car.

It's a pretty disconcerting clunk, very loud - at first I thought I must have hit something underneath on something on the road - it's that kind of noise. I felt it up through the steering wheel so not sure if it's related to that?

First thing I did was check underneath to make sure nothing was obviously hanging down in the wrong spot, but it all seems okay. Dad's had a look through the engine bay area and it doesn't appear like anything is in the wrong spot etc. He's a mechanic but was hesitant to probe too far - hasn't done much work on VE's and figured we'd leave it for the experts, if need be.

I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar noise? I saw a thread for a clunk in the rear of the car but none for the front - this is definitely where my clunk is coming from. It did it last night & today; my friend said she felt it in her feet.

I can't even pinpoint exactly what I'm doing when it does it - but I think it's when I'm braking & steering at the same time, which sounds a little bizarre to me.

Anyway, thoughts or ideas would be great :) thanks!

Mine is like this too. It kinda seems like it's something rusted. Because after a few humps on the road the noise is gone. Then when u park your car for a long period and drive it again then the noise is back.

That would kind of make sense ... have you got a VE as well? I've been away all week - Dad drove it on Wednesday but didn't hear it, but then I drove it last night & today, and heard it twice. It's a horrible sound, I feel like the car is going to disintegrate in front of me!

Has it got anything to do with pushing the clutch in?

Mine clunks really badly when I apply the clutch and I can feel the clunk through my steering wheel and feet.

There are a number of reworks for front end knocks in VE's, to specify from a vague description that the noise is coming from the swaybar links is rediculous at best.

Your best bet would be to, if the car is under warranty still, take the car in to your Holden dealer and explain the noise to them. They will be able to determine where the noise is coming from.

There is an entire flow chart which is followed to positively distinguish the noise location.

No Bull.

hay mate lots of ppl come to my work to find noises and then we find them then they take them to the dealers we tell them to the point of this is the dealership mechanics (most of them) are useless and only change oil in specialising shops they only do one part of they and do it better than other mechanics this why when you have suspension probs you go to a suspension mech if have gearbox probs you go to a gearbox mech if you have engine probs you to ahhhh guess what a engine mechanic

what do you do for work do you sit a computer all day or are you a builder or a mechanic

edit: we also ring the dealership and tell them this before the customer gets there

Im a mechanic, for Holden. Which is why your last post confuses me. Maybe somebody should inform my boss that we're doing it all wrong. Because last week i changed oil (which you say i should be doing) pulled out a gearbox, replaced some brakes, and replaced some swaybar droplinks.

Maybe you only do one thing, working for Pedders, changing suspension bushes etc all day might be a career path you wish to take, but you'll never be a real mechanic and you'll always have to "Confirm with your boss" when you're asked tricky mechanical questions such as "What size spanner do i need to undo the sump plug on an Ecotec Commodore" (that's a VS-VY, and the answer is 19. There you go, one less question to ask your boss.)
