Hi guys there is this fella selling a tech2 with a laptop and all the accessories, he claims its authentic and it costed him around 25k etc…. now he is selling nearly quarter of what costed him, the question is it good to have one handy? im not a mechanic but i do play with holden cars quite alot… also i heard there is a software holden released to change the timing chains parameters or something like that, would this do the job? please share your thoughts and opinions….

About to seal the deal this week

If that is around $6000.00
To me, a lot to expensive!

Is everything gold plated?
How old is the laptop?

I don't think the software will work with the newer internet setup? Could be wrong too? hahaha, wouldn't be the first time.

What are your thoughts on this @stooge & @RevNev?

It's a lot of money for an old laptop running Tech2Win and a heap of Isuzu software cards.

Didn't you cheap out on 2 sets of timing chains recently? And you want to spend 5k or 6k on this thing? I'll just leave this here:

Yup, it's called a "big ol' bandaid". Holden basically used it to make customers go away for 3 months (presumably to try and push them over their warranty date) until they came back later when it was much worse. It doesn't fix anything, but might make you feel good if you like burying your head in the sand.

Whether or not you'll be able to do it with this (even though it's totally pointless) will totally depend on what definitions and cards are included with it (also how it might be licensed, I have no idea), but if "VT Commodore" is as new as this one's got on it then it doesn't look promising.

Honestly though, for something to buy just to keep "handy", unless there's something real funky you wanna do you're better off just buying a clone Tech 2 or a scanner that has the functionality built in (as well as a magnitude of other features like oscilloscopes). I would wager the majority of dedicated and technically competent members here don't have even a clone because they're just not needed particularly often.

Ok, I'll also add that TIS 2000 has been shut down. the laptop is just a boat anchor, and an expensive one at that.

Everything is now run through Tech2win on a windows platform for almost all holden vehicles upto 2012, exceptions being the GMDAT (Deawoo) Korean based Captiva, Cruze and Barina.
2012 and beyond uses GDS2 diagnostic interface with a costly subcription to GM's servers.

This deal would only be good if the kit is able to interface the Vetronix tech2 to GM's Techline Connect through the internet, even then you would need to pay for a subscription to load the last version for Holden vehicles which i think was 185.000. There are better alternatives.

Just get a timing chain and gear set, and send it to a reputable mechanic.
