As per title...
How does it function and why did not they just have it open permanently instead of butterfly mechanism...?
Whats the logic behind this and would this offer any benefit over stock SS airbox duct ?

Found it...

The rest of the range was not forgotten with a new bi-modal air intake system being largely responsible, along with new exhaust headers, for the increase in power of the normally aspirated V8 to 340kW.

It’s the engine fitted as standard to Senator and Grange models and optional on any R8. The bi-modal air intake has a valve that increases the amount of air sucked into the engine depending on throttle position and engine revs for extra power. When closed, torque (or pulling power) is enhanced at lower engine speeds.

Hmm unless thats for the intake pipe that runs to the interior for the air induction noise
No, the HSV bimodal intake existed before the fart tooter tube on VFII.
Plenty of info here and on hsvforum about this, hard to justify retrofit price and hassle versus benefit with typical aftermarket CAI.

Yeah true. It's just the OEM look that is appealing to me for my Motorsport. I'd be just as happy to leave the actuator open at all times...

Thread dig

HSV response about bimodal intake.

If you can't tell I find certain engineering subjects particulary interesting ;)

hmmmm.....
Andrew Purcell got John Mazarakis. “HSV Technical Advisor' at the HSV drive day
I attended in 2015 to explain this.
Drive by noise was not the issue like it is with carby engines, closing the bimodal air
intake to slow air intake speed was needed to boost low engine speed torque* was
the reason given

*always an issue since LS1 powertrains were released here
