Mines always made that pinging/crinkly chip packet noise. Both before and after mods. My wife's 2010 SSV did the same thing, you hear it most in echoey places such as right next to a freeway barrier with the window down.

Holden reckon it's injector pulse, AFAIK it's not harmful.

Is that what that noise is?

I had no idea. I just learnt something new.

Had the same pinging noise with mine, took it to Holden and they said it was something to do with the AFM, anyway just changed the manifolds over from the original cast to the stock HSV headers and the pinging has gone completely.

Mr Redline's always made it, from day one to now six months later and it's never worried me. It's the exhaust I think - I also think I've heard it called the "Rattle snake". I don't mind it, if anything it gives the car character. I'd stop worrying and just enjoy your car.

VFII SSV Redline Ute
Been there, talked about it in this forum and still has it. Got my VF SSV auto ute back in May, metallic clicking noises when accelerator is pressed on the move, louder when going up hill and under load. Holden mechanic heard the noise, said it is "normal", Holden Customer Service said it is "normal", took it to local tunning specialist, they said it is "normal"...so I gave up, driving with the window closed and can't heard anything. Done over 12,000 km so far, fuel economy around 12 litres per 100 km. 15,000 km service is coming up. Please let us know if a solution can be found, but I am sort of getting use to the noise now, don't know if I can cope without it..Ha..Ha..Ha..

Must admit I don't have that issue with my auto SSV. It's had a tune, exhaust and CAI etc. though.

My new vf ssv redline made the same sound logged it with hp tuners and 100% its pinging.
Stock tune has too much timing in low load areas in the tune.
Combine that with a massively restrictive exhaust and that's the result.
When I changed exhaust ,headers and cats most of it was gone.
Logging showed up to 1+ deg in some areas not much but it should haven't any knock retard at all.
A lot of factory tunes are very average and have some kr.
I also use 98 bp ultimate so its got decent fuel.

That's interesting, wonder if all cars are effected
I honestly don't think I've heard my car do it, but I'm unsure what I'm listening for
