Seeing as the dealer is servicing mine while it' under warranty (this one is the last under wareanty) I figured I'd play by their rules. Next service I'll be using a higher zinc content oil from Penrite... likely the one you mentioned

Look into 0w40 Mobil 1, it has higher zinc than the penrite. It's pricey but if you buy it in 20l tubs it's not too bad. I use it in the commode and volvo

Yep run it for years in my L77, alloytecs and now the ls3
yeah I dumped the factory oil at 1700kms and noticed inside the cabin the dealership had a Castrol edge sticker in the window so I went with that.

Had 9 month service done on Monday.
Just done 1004km:confused:.
Oil was black as! Replaced it with HPR 5 - 5W40. It is smoother and quieter than the factory fill. Very happy :)

Have an MSE. Not even cracked the 1,000Kms in it yet despite owning it for a few months now.

Noticed it has a Castrol service reminder sticker on the window. No idea if that was the factory fill or not.

Was bored one day so decided to have a look at a range of the different oils available to see who had a Dexos specification product. Purely in the interest of furthering knowledge of course. Nerd alert!
  • Castrol Edge 0W-40 ->Dexos 2
  • Mobil 1 5W-30 ->Dexos 1
  • Penrite Enviro+ GF-5 5W-30 ->Dexos 1 and Dexos 1 Gen 2

Interestingly Datateck, which is the web platform/database that the oil companies use in their web sites when you use the "find the oil suitable for my car" feature does not show a product for Castrol. Instead, it states to call Castrol Technical - 1300 557 998

I called castrol technical couple weeks ago.
They do not sell dexos 1 licenced product directly to public in small quantities. Not sure why. I would use it...
They call it Castrol edge professional which is dexos 1 licenced and they sell it to mechanics and some dealers. Smallest size is 20L and they can tell you your nearest stockist if you really wanna buy it in that size...

Castrol edge professional

They all come with that, even the LSA. Meant to be be better than the old magnatec but I dropped it out at the 1 K inspection.

Commodores have been around for a long time, just wondering has anyone been using fully synthetic oil regardless of brands and grades has had an engine failure? Or has been using non-synthetic cheap oil and has had an engine failure? Assuming oil/filter has been changed at recommended intervals.
