9k reasonable budget if you're doing most of spanner work.

Look at Ace Performance Tuning fb page for ideas or contact for prices.

Comes down to condition of your engine/trans/diff & parts you already have if reusable + labour will chew through that budget if not careful.

Thanks gtrboyy.
I'm not overly handy with the tools. Have a neighbour who might help a bit but more than likely will be all done by a mechanic. If only I was more handy with the tools.....

If your engine/trans is healthy may not need expensive engine mods....set of diff gears, shift kit, memcal tune with decent exhaust it will be more fun than a stocker & may be enough to keep you happy for awhile.

Need to work out what condition it's all in first.

Remove engine yourself. Supply short motor (block, rods/pistons, crank etc.) to a shop. Get shop to machine and assemble the short engine with flat tops and a mild cam etc. Assemble the long engine yourself (heads, valvetrain, induction etc.) Keep heads stock and even reuse your valve gear. You'll get it done for $4500-6500.

You need a shop that knows Holden engines. You also get a lot of free good advice from these places. I use a bloke that's been building & modifying Australian/US/ British engines since at least the late 1970's.

Why is that? Does Holden have some voodoo other GM products don't?

I actually thought the same thing. I had a specialist diesel engine rebuild joint rebuild my 355 short a few years back. To be fair they do a lot of Holden, Ford stuff on the side but it's not their speciality.

Just as long as the shop knows enough about your engine to talk the job over with them, decide on what parts you need and provide advice on good suppliers. There's a lot of **** parts out there for rebuilding 304's.

Durapro gaskets for everything other than heads cometic MLS for that. ACL or king bearings. Speed pro pistons or better hastings rings. All that can be bought through prescision which is what most engine shops use.

If stroking most decent stroker kits come with quality parts like from COME and Pavtek.

Does any recommend buying the parts themselves and then having the mechanics fit them.... Was thinking it could be cheaper doing this as some places don't pass on the trade price they get...
