While I agree there are limitations on what can be done. There is still some functions a Snapon can perform that a paperclip can't, even on these old PCMs.
The tool (scanner) has to be able to have the capability of reading ALDL (obd1) protocol.

A lot of the newer scanners don't have that protocol, so won't be able to read the ecu or any other modules on the bus, later cars, it would be called the canbus.

When I had the VR two different garages used their Snapon's and they connected just fine.

Just because 1 or 2 garages have snap on scanners, that doesn't mean all snap on scanners can connect to the ecu!

Im wondering will a VR 5L ECU work in a VS 5L series 2? My car is a VS SS series 2

Iv been told they are the same, any help appreciated, cheers

I'll add the ECU from my car has the 2 blue plugs and the one Im looking at has the 2 Blue plugs, also has the same service number at the top.

Did you bother going to see 2n4 and Edinburgh? They've been around a while and know their stuff

Or are you just going to throw parts at it willy nilly hoping for the best?

obd1 is like commodore64 to a new laptop.

Most likely scanner could not link to something archaic prooobably obd2 onwards like most scanners.

If you've ever looked up all fault codes you're underestimating power of the paper clip & google or forum search lol
I thought It had the OBD2 port?

Yes but they still use the older communications protocol. The LS equipped cars were the first to use actual OBD2, the V6 stuff continued with the older protocol until they fitted the newer alloytec motor.

Will an ECU from a VR 5L auto work in my VS SS series 2?

I managed to source one from a Wreckers,

I'm getting different answers and some saying Memcal will need to be changed others saying you don't need to do ,that it should just plug in an play.

Yes VR pcm can be used. Just need to use the correct memcal.
Listen to this bloke, he knows what he is talking about. He has given me plenty of sound advice in the past.

Same PCM, different tune. So yes, swap the memcal over or it won't start.
