Ok so i have searched heaps and came up with nothing. I got home tonight after a month away and the my battery is dead in the remote. I don't have a spare key. If i get in and start the car the alarm will go off, so i wont be able to drive it anywhere. If the remote battery is dead how do i get a new key when it can't be coded of the current one? What are my options? I knew i should have got a spare key.

any help would be awesome, cheers, Jacko

i just rang an after hours locksmith and he said that the HSV keys are coded different to the commodore because of the immobiliser. He said that the car needs to go into holden to be sorted out. That's not possible as i cant start or move the car and it is in an underground carpark and couldn't be towed from where it is. aaarrrrhhhhh man i hate holden sometimes

if you have the red key tag to the switch in the glovebox, a decent locksmith can code a key on site for you

The car is deadlocked, if I open it with the key won't that set the alarm off? And where would I find this red key tag in the glovebox?

I've rang multiple locksmiths and most say all they need is the VIN and the key head, is this correct for the HSV's?

How do you know its the key remote thats flat and not the car battery ?

I would think a car battery going flat after a month of idle is much more likley, especially if you have aftermarket av equipment installed drawing idle current.

If it is the key, i would try operating it directly in the centre of the windscreen above the dash, as thats where the receiver is, if there is some charge left in the battery it may just work.

HSV has an ISS immobilizer and needs the red barrel key to program a new remote. you would know if you had this key, it's not something you can miss
if you don't have this key and your remote is dead you are in a world of hurt
search "iss" and "hsv" "remote"
as Greasy hands said may just be vehicle battery
what were symptoms prior to month away, was car battery or remote acting up
try turning key in door to unlock, if alarm goes off so be it. then try starting ,often a remote will not unlock but will still start car
but you need that red key, contact previous owner

Thanks for the advice fellas. So i unlocked her and the alarm went off. I stuck the key in the ignition and she fired up straight away, no sign of a dead battery. However, even though she fired up fine and battery seemed fine the buttons on the remote are working now. This has me stumped a little.

I checked the glovebox and i have no red key. Im going to take it in tomorrow as now im super worried if my remote was to die. I wonder what holden do if you dont have the red key? this is possibly the stupidest thing i have ever encountered from owning a holden.

If you don't have the red key you have to have the iss system removed which costs a fair bit
look up info on this forum for Dr Bob he is in mornington and is an expert on ISS
don't bother taking it to any Holden you need a HSV specialist who won't be able to help you without the red key
The ISS system is like any other quality immobilizer it relies on the owner/s not losing the keys/remotes
unfortunately a previous owner has put the red key in a safe place and not passed it on with car
you cannot get a new red key, you need a whole new ISS system or have ISS removed
see DR bob
edit- just been reading some tech bulletins and it appears as VT11 onwards uses an ESS system which does not use the red and black keys so a HSV dealer may be able to program a new remote for you

VT SII and inwards don't use ISS but rather ESS and don't need the red tag.
