OK so I was at the shops today and my 'check alternator' warning came on, along with battery light. Car has done 180,000. I wired in a GPS and Dash cam a couple of weeks ago, but haven't driven more than about 100 k's since then. Wired a twin plug socket for the GPS and Dash cam to an accessories wire. Does anyone know if this could be effecting the alternator? Made it back home and battery doesn't have enough power left to start the car. Maybe just coincidence? Dead alternator at 180,000k?

Try replacing the regulator

OK, can that cause too little amount of charge to be generated to the battery? Also that's the little black box on the back, held in place with two phillips head screws isn't it?

Yep that's right. They can die without any warning. They're good alternators, it's very rare for something to go wrong with the alternator itself.
