VZ Thermostat replacement

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster. I will be replacing the thermostat on my VZ wagon whilst the gearbox is off (replacing the torque converter in it) and was wondering if it is possible to just replace the thermostat insert rather than the whole thing, or are they a whole unit? Will be replacing the gaskets and o rings a special well.

Have already replaced the water pump and the thermo fans as they were gone, coolant temp sensor works good.

Yes you can just do the thermostat if you want to. As you know the job is a pain to do again later so if your going to reuse the housing just check all the seal faces are in good condition.
