go for whichever will suit your purposes better and what you personally want from it.
ie. will you be in alot of traffic and a manual will infuriate you after a while?
or may an auto bore you and you want to play around with some gears?

as for driving a manual LS1 with a lumpy cam.
i personally dont have experience but a mate had a S/C LS1 manual with a lumpy cam. had no issue driving it as a daily.
except for his back pocket :p
its all a learning curve of when to change gears, how to take off and so forth. eventually it will become second nature.

You take an auto down the 1/4, it'll only change when it wants to, not when you want it to.
Unless you manually shift the auto......then whats the point.

Not a purpose built auto. You can get it to do what you want and i would imagine there's not too many people out there that could match the speed of an auto gear change in a manual. There's a reason most drag cars run auto's. Manauls are brilliant circut gearbox's though.

Yes you are right about the purpose built auto. But the cost of these would probably be out of the reach of the average Joe.

manual only.

for any sort of driving, apart from straight line dragging and highway cruising the auto is absolutely crap.

It has 1 less gear that is very important. 3rd in an auto is the same ratio (1:1) as 4th in a manual.(4th in auto is equivalent to 5th in manual). Therefore you have that extra gear to select for optimum driving in a manual that you don't have in an auto. You will be spewing everytime u get jumped roll-on by smaller cars as your auto was making up its mind which wrong gear to give you every time. By the time its figured it out, its too late, you have lost that spot/gap etc. Enough to make you hate the car. You'll be driving around in 2nd gear nearly all the time as 3rd will be too tall (cruising), and 1st too short (launching), leaving nothing in between for those moments when u want to gain some speed ethusiastically..

Not sure what type of auto you are using if it is doing that.
