2008 Caprice
I have a 2008 Caprice LTZ Middle East version with the l98 and just recently It has started to not start but just keep cranking. It does eventually start but maybe on the 2nd/3rd try. It doesn’t always happen but it happens enough for it to be a problem. Also when it takes a couple of try’s to start, smoke comes out the exhaust but that’s only when this starting issue occurs otherwise there’s no smoke and the car runs fine. Also sometimes I have to give it a bit of gas when it has trouble starting. Also sometimes when it has trouble starting the RPM’s just start going up by themselves gradually increasing until I just turn the car off and try to crank it again. Also the car sometimes feels like it’s misfiring at lowish RPM’s early in the day I’m guessing when it’s not as hot outside or I don’t even exact know why but it typically only happens when it’s earlier in the day. It’s a very weird issue. I have attached a link to a couple videos of my issue.

I also have a lifter tick so anyone got some good advice on what to do to stop it from wearing out the engine because I’m not really in the mood to go out spend a ton to go and change the lifters.

Also I have just watched some videos and read about the Crank position sensor but supposedly from what I have seen that means the car won’t crank at all but I’m not 100% sure if someone could elaborate on that based on my symptoms it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

How may K's has it done ?

Edit, I just seen your Video, and its done 231,xxx k/ms,

Being its done more than 160,000 k's

Sounds like your fuel pump is starting to fail, hence lack of fuel and/or pressure.

crank angle sensor. typical symptoms
stalls when hot, will not restart until it cools down, will still crank with no issues
sounds like a leaky injector to me

I believe that the fuel pump has been changed before. That’s what my dad says.

The car has never stalled. The starting issue is random but usually on first start so when it’s cold. Ill look into the leaky injector.

to help narrow it down
when you start in the morning
turn ignition to reds without cranking
count to three, then turn off
then try to start
this helps to build fuel pressure, if it is the pump

I’ll try that.

I tried that and the issue still occurred so the fuel pressure isn’t the issue also I opened the hood and took off the hood cover and checked the valve for the fuel and it was high pressure so that rules out the pressure. I think it could be the sensor.

On any VE or WM I always allow the car to check itself then start it. I dont do what you do is stick the key in and 0.5 of a second later try to start it. Once again, let it do it check first then start the car.
