Wilso's Black VN Wagon (the painted with rollers one)

Yeah started painting it now almost 7 years ago. Here's the thread I created about it back from 2008: https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/diy-painting-your-car-rollers.76882

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Come to think of it, its the usual 3 or 4 times a year even though for the last 2 years it hasn't been out as often as I have a new daily driver.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Been awhile since I posted in here. I still have the wagon and the paint is still looking great, just a matter of keeping the wax up. Also put the wag's on club rego as its now 25 years old. Keeping it for the long haul. Enjoy.

Wilso's Black VN Wagon (the painted with rollers one)

Hi All, Some of you might remember me hand painting my VN wagon using rollers back in 2008. Well I still have the wagon, paint is still looking great and the VN is now on club rego as it just clicked over 25 years old in November. I recently took it out for a photo shoot and thought I should...

    [Buick] Different Rocker Arm Retainers?

Thanks immortality. I guess because the lower one is the "older" version I'll try and find a used right hand side retainer and replace mine. Cheers.

    [Buick] Different Rocker Arm Retainers?

Hi All, I've just done a head gasket on my VN S1. I had both heads checked and found one of them was cracked. Managed to find a new one at a local wreckers but once I had a good look at them I noticed that there are some differences in the rocker arm retainer (and rocker arm bolt) so I just want...

vn v6 intake manifold/head difference between series one and series 2/vp/vr

Bit of a thread dig but couldn't find the answer anywhere else... On the front of the S1 manifold what's the hose that connects back into the manifold itself (kind of like an upside-down U), is it just an oil breather type hose? Does it have a part number, or can I use a different hose bent...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Thanks man. I probably wouldn't do it again, but I can happily mark "painting a car" off my list of achievements. If I was to paint a car again I'd probably learn how to use a spray gun or just fork out a few thousand and pay someone to do it. The VN is still driven daily and the paint is...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Its already been covered a few pages back, I think its called Toplac, just give it a go and see how it turns out if you're using something different.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Thanks for the comments :) Problem with the front bumper is simple, I should have stripped the existing paint off the bumpers more. All I did was a light sand, spray with plastic primer, and then paint over the top. I'm actually surprised more hasn't come off in 4 years. Either way its not that...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

As promised, new pics. Paint is almost 4 years old. Just washed the car, and wiped down with a micro fibre cloth. Car was polished and waxed a few weeks before Christmas 2011. There's a few stone chips and other blemishes, paint has also come off a tiny bit on my front bumper (1st...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Wow I've missed a few posts in here the last few days.... All I can say is its almost 4 years since I painted the wagon and the paint is still holding up. After a wash/polish/wax you'd still think I painted it just last week. I'll be sure to get some pics up soon (if I ever remember).

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Hard to say from the pics on what is happening. To me it looks alright, but at a guess I'm thinking the black spots are probably where the thin paint isn't adhering properly to the panel/previous coats. If that's the case you'll have to sand the whole lot back and start again as it will never...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Hard to say Russell, get a tin and try it using the method, then I guess it comes down to how well it handles the elements (rain, sun etc).

DIY Painting your car with rollers

I used a rotary polisher and some meguires polish. I didn't use any special process. I did wait around 60 days before polishing though so the paint could cure properly. No scratches etc from going black.

Looking good. Nothing wrong with how its coming along there mate.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Cheers man, always good to hear comments like this from people in the painting trade :) Pretty sure the water helps the sandpaper from clogging up so easily, also stops dust flying about when you sand.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

My last coat on all the panels I made sure was perfect (ie: no bubbles and made sure it spread evenly) therefore giving it such a "wet/shiney" look. Then just polish and wax :)

DIY Painting your car with rollers

My final coat was pretty damn good so I just left it and didn't bother with 2000 grit, I did give it a polish though.

Turps to thin the paint down. Penetrol is added to help the paint stick and also to make it go on smoother. See the website here: http://www.floodaustralia.net/products/penetrol.htm

DIY Painting your car with rollers

I never let my mixture get that low, or if I found i was getting low i'd tip it into a seperate jar and mix a new batch. Also please remember when I painted my car in the warmer months (Feb and March), my paint mixture my not work well in the coller months, that why I suggest its all trial and...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Sorry mate, I thought you were asking how many litres of Penetrol you'd need. 4L of paint should go close, just depends how many coats you do... Goodluck!

Bunnings or any good hardware shop. They come in 1L tins from memory, so for a start get 2 or 3 if you're doing the engine bay and boot.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

As promised, here are some photos of the car after about 27-28 months from first painting it. Car was given a wash and a full detail. Still looks great, and no problems from not using primer.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Interesting find about the Brightside paint guys. My guess is the Toplac would be very similiar to Brightside. Maybe if you can find the MSDS for both paints it might help in seeing if they have similiar chemicals in them. Failing that, I think this is the importer of the International brand...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Im sure metallic paint has been talked about already in this thread by the other guys. I have no idea how it would turn out. Try it yourself and see. Whenever I can be stuffed. Once a month maybe. There's no rule on when to do it....

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Nah I didn't sand back to metal, I didn't even use primer. :)

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Keep the wax on it to help protect the paint from the elements (weather, bird crap etc) because there's no clear coat over the top to protect it.
  33. wilso

DIY Painting your car with rollers

    1. I didn't use primer, so cant say for sure. I've heard from other people doing this method that the Brightside brand primer can be rolled on. 2. The sanding time really depends on how good/bad the previous coat was and also what grade sandpaper your using. Take for instance you got heaps of...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

The 30 to 60 days is to do with the paint still curing, you dont want to polish it within this time frame else you might damage all your hard work. Yes you can still drive it in this period.

Not sure. I reckon mix the sparkle in and give it a try, thats the only way to find out if it'll work and look good. Good luck

Try pinning a sheet up on the roof above the car, may or maynot help... Other than that the pics are looking great:w00t:

DIY Painting your car with rollers

    1. I painted my bumpers the same way, but used plastic spray primer first. Oneday I may actually sand the bumpers back and repaint as the plastic has a texture to it and you can still see it once painted. 2. I bought some foam brushes from an art shop, they vary in size from half an inch to 2...

DIY Painting your car with rollers

The VN looks pretty good, the paint looks semi-gloss however. But as long as your happy with it. Here's how the paint looks on my wagon after about 16 months since I first did it. Pics are also in my first post.

DIY Painting your car with rollers

Cheers man. Are you using a similiar paint mixture to what I used? If you are I suggest trying a different blend. That blend worked for me and the black paint which might not work for red. If I were you I'd wait atleast 60 days, I could still smell the paint curing after 30 days...
