I had this problem on my vz wagon. The fuel flap where it attaches to the guard has a foam type gasket which squashes up and fuel vapors get past. Unscrew it and smear silastic on the gasket and on the end of the screws before you screw it back on.

Make sure its on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke. Put compression tester in no 1 cyl and turn over by hand and watch for the gauge to raise a little. Use a long peice of wire (coat hanger) down the plug hole to determine when the piston is at tdc.

How much fuel came out when it cranked? Was the pressure high and was there plenty of volume? Try squirting some aerostart in the manifold and see if it will start. If it's got spark it should at least fire for a short time

Check the electrical plug that connects to the dizzy. The rubber boot deteriorates and water gets in and corrodes the terminals. Was a common problem

Changed my park light globes for LED's Pulled off the drivers door trim in an attempt to rectify the drivers side electric window. Still no luck. Could lift the window up and down about 1/2 inch and found one of the alloy pop rivet heads broken off.

How do you find the space in the back compared to some of the earlier wagons such as VY/VZ? Mate of mine had a VE Sportwagon as a company car and he wasnt happy with the space in the back.
