This is the wonderful, magical world of capitalism & unicorn farts. Unfortunately that freedom comes at a price. What those advocating for less government are really asking for is the ability to rip people off with more impunity. You'll find they're mostly conservative by nature & believe private enterprise should be carrying out the work of our public service. What these clowns won't tell you is that your utility bills increasing by 20% is the direct result of this very same privatisation they so dearly yearn for.

Am I missing something?

The capital growth of the property over time.

While selling and placing the proceeds into a term deposit may have resulted in a greater net income over 12 months (which also equals a greater tax bill), those cash funds are actually losing value (purchasing power) against inflation whereas the property would be gaining value in the current climate.

This is the answer. The capital growth is the real value.

Wow! $80k seems a lot of money for each individual. What is the population of your town?
100-150 properties who don't have sewer.

Blimey, you must be fairly remote. Mind you, in saying that, I suppose you've answered your own concerns by saying TAS Water can't make you do that.

Imagine complaining about capitalism while actively investing in shares thereby fueling capitalism. Don’t act all high and mighty pal.

It's the typical western communist attitude.

They yearn for the promises of, and denounce all but communism. But only if they can live in the benefits of capitalism.

One day of actual work and he'd fold (he's already told us moving boxes from one spot to another is too strenuous for him)

Maybe gulag would be beneficial for him, give him a taste of something to *actually* complain about.

"the next stage of planning would only proceed if 50 per cent of the community supported the proposal, and the service introduction would only be delivered if at least 80 per cent of the community committed to it"

Losh needs to lobby the town folk, not Tas Water.
