Distributed denial of service attack, basically constant requests of the website until it overloads.

It's very difficult if not impossible to protect a site from with tools like the high orbit ion cannon. By the time a malicious attack is detected, it's already too late. As mentioned above its all too easy to arrange a bunch of zombies or script kiddies for support. On IRC there are a number of channels that this can be organised through, you just have to wait your turn and provide assistance to other folk.

They're monitored and addressed where possible but it's like trying to count grains of sand blowing in the wind.

You have to figure that whom ever instigated the attack probably didn't actually participate, hell any number of actual members may have been trying to log on at the same time as the DDoS attack so how do you separate the legitimate users from attackers?

Usually by the type of request that hits the server. That said when something like HOIC is employed by the time you or your product realises something is up it's way too late.
