Got the variable power supply we made while doing pre apprenticeship stuff many moons ago out. Used it to test a theory on a timer circuit.
Bit of fiddling with electronics and relearning some timers that we bought a while ago too.

House AC fan stopped, so pulled the motor and replaced the bearings. Had spares from a few years back. One was fully seized and the other wasn't far off. Working like a dream in prep for the next few days.

Had a new TIG torch head arrive in the mail.
New project.
I converted my original 17V Lift Arc torch to a 17F HFS torch (valve vs flex).
I found my new T2 torch awkward and uncomfortable to use in my arthritic hands, whereas the 17V was much more comfortable.
And it works well! Got to run lots of beads on stainless, then melted a lot of aluminium until the torch got too hot to handle. First time that's happened.

More electronics geekery.
Made a timer system more permanent and got all the links and wires all prepped for an install.
30mins now in the shed means about 2 minutes install in the field all labelled and propped.

More mods to make the TIG torch more compact, and easier to hang on to.
Added a stubby gas lens collet body so it can use stubby cups.
Only problem was gas leakage between the cup and nylon spacer/gasket.
Found a different style of spacer/gasket in my box of bits. It's specific to #8 Pyrex see through cups.
The stubby cups didn't quite fit, 0.8mm too big in diameter. Time for a bit of lathe work.
Set the spacer/gasket in an ER40 collet, as clamping it in a 3-jaw chuck would probably distort it.

Bored it to size. Carbide insert cut it nicely, thought I might have to grind a HSS tool to cut it.
Here's a couple of different spacer/gaskets I have on hand.

No leakage! This is the torch set up with a #5 cup for AC alloy welding.

Set up for DC steel welding, #12 cup.

Well the electronics geekery played up.
The timer was using a few chips as the switch which I think internally cooked themselves.
Had another set up which had an actual relay on it instead.
And worked just as intended after rejigging to suit a different layout.

So managed to turn a 24v system pulse output (.5 seconds) into switching a 12v system for 5 seconds as the unit needed 12v.

Bit of messing around, but also using some previous knowledge and being able to make things work.
And placed an order for some replacement timer relays at about $5ea
All this to save spending $400 on a system for timing. Utilising the old equipment.

Potentially tomorrow it'll be playing in the shed to make up some coax switching boxes. Fiddly but a good way to test the skills.
