There were warnings back as far as April to avoid the area if possible and as for that map it's actually the Flightaware system that tracks every flight around the world (as long as it has it's transpoders switched on) and the bottom arc is route that MH17 has been taking recently

Actually, the area warned to avoid was the Crimea, which the lower track gets a lot closer to than the more northern flight corridor.

That map was made by someone else, most likely a news organisation.

The actual map is this one (from Flightradar24.com).

This thread has actually achieved something worthwhile. Hotrod has learned to spell "error" correctly (while making a total goose of himself). All is not lost.

Dealing with more serious matters, the Middle East, Israel/Gaza and the Ukraine combine to form a very large dangerous flying zone at present and air travel between our part of the world and Europe will probably have to undergo some serious route changes to ensure the safety of aircraft, for some time to come. The fact that such deadly weapons are in the hands of non-government bodies is a dangerous sign of the way local wars are developing. We can't be sure that this sort of thing wouldn't happen again over the Ukraine, or some of the other hot spots in the Middle East, if Buk missiles or similar weapons fell into the wrong hands. Countries like Russia, China, North Korea and even France aren't too choosy who they sell their weapons to, if the price is right and we can never say for certain that they won't come into the possession of terrorists and ratbags who would gladly take aim at any civilian aircraft that flew overhead, even in allegedly safe zones, just to perpetrate their cause.

Just to add some perspective, flights don't always follow the optimum flight path as would be denoted by the red dotted line on the maps posted, for comparison, below is the flight path for NZ2 AirNZ (codeshare) LA to London. You'll note it deviates greatly from the ideal flight path.

There can be many reasons for this, on this particular flight it most likely has to do with the flight restrictions of a twin engine aircraft and the maximum distance it is allowed from an airfield at any time, this is known as ETOPS ETOPS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

yer thanks now I know and if I can keep it up I might have a best seller out soon LOL .

So all the blame is on the Malaysia airlines as they ignored the danger sings to save cost , next they will fly with one engine to save money .

If Qantas and the U.S kept away so should all aircrafts , they were safe from the rebels as they don't have the missile to go the distance but Russia do as you no because it shot down the plane , very safe corridor well done .

So by that logic everyone who's ever been shot was completely at fault for getting in the path of a bullet. Damn we have jails full of wrongful convictions.

WTF mate its oversley you don't understand if someone shot you on a safe street its the shooters fault .

but the warnings went out to stay away from that flight zone since April , so they knew the risk of entering that air space that's the different .

so the shooter and airline is at fault .

Go back and check your facts.

The warnings in April were for the Crimea area, go find yourself a map and see where that is in relation to this event but just in case you don't get it I'll spell it out for you. It is a different location altogether.

Ukrainian airspace was open without restriction above 32,000ft up until this tragedy.

Okay I just caught up with the thread from a number of pages back. Didn't mean to feed the troll.
