There is a slot in the centre console in which to place the remote if the remote's battery is low and the remote is not detected. The slot is next to the USB port (lift up the armrest to see it). Not sure if you can start the car like this if the remote is completely u/s.

No, it doesn't. You can access the globes from inside the boot, but you have to remove some of the boot trim first (see attached image from owner's manual). If you have a manual, it would be a good idea to read it -- it's surprising what you can find hidden in its pages.

Have you tried cleaning the inside of the windscreen (when dry) to remove any haze that might be deposited on it? Sometimes fumes given off by the upholstery when sitting in the sun can deposit on the windscreen, causing a permanent haze effect.
