How to Remove VZ Driver's Seatbelt

Hi all, Sorry to dig up a dead thread. I just don't want to create a new one about the same thing and bugger off and never reply to it, like I am one to do (sorry - I'll try to keep that to a minimum in 2020). Now, here's my conundrum. I do all the work on my car myself because I *have* to - I...

Replace VY II Calais shocks with OEM factory FE1.5 - where/how?

Hey all, The question is effectively in the title. I need to do the shocks, pretty much all four corners on my VY II Calais. I'm checking the Monroe website and it makes no distinction as to what is FE1, FE1.5, FE2, etc, and it actually recommends the same part number for basically all sedans...

V6 knock until CEL sets, may be “left bank knock sensor circuit malfunction” related.

Hi all; I'm sorry to bump, I'm sure there must be a rule against this, in which case, I apologize, and won't do it again! But I'm completely lost as to what to do for my car. The only thing I can think of, is hooking up an ALDL cable and seeing if I can get something resembling mode 6 data, at...

V6 knock until CEL sets, may be “left bank knock sensor circuit malfunction” related.

Hey guys, I’ve had this problem for a good couple of years now but it’s only now started to get worse. In this period of time I’ve done probably 70,000km. Ok, so what started happening was the check engine light would set when accelerating. No apparent problem, it just sets. Had this checked...

Ecotec replacement and rebuild; sanity check, tips/tricks?

Yeah, a used second hand engine is the idea. I'm over worrying about it and I really doubt it is a knock sensor. But I don't want to have to worry about a used engine either, which is why I'm apprehensive about getting one from a wreckers, especially when they're from straight bodies, which all...

Ecotec replacement and rebuild; sanity check, tips/tricks?

Hey guys. This is a two part request for advice. The first part, is a sanity check as to what the hell is going on with my motor, second part is just asking for general advice on engine replacement in these cars, and my first rebuild. Sorry it will be long. Have a coffee on me if you wanna come...

Want to upgrade engine + trans cooling

Thanks, man. I figured that halfway is no big issue, however I don't want to run the risk of the temp running away in case it doesn't go back down, or the rad heatsoaks just badly enough to cause this. I just want to upgrade the cooling capacity as a result. I'm happy to let the PCM run the...

    Brake upgrade

I stuck T2 rotors and bendix ultra premium pads on my V6, stock everything else. Bloody hell it pulls up quick. You need to be careful with slotted rotors though. Don't ride them at all. Be careful with how you brake and be mindful of how long you've been braking for. Reason is that slotted...

Want to upgrade engine + trans cooling

Hey guys, I've started working in the automotive industry and as such I'm going to start requiring to tow cars and whatnot. I just towed my first one today and it went ok, apart from getting a little warm a couple of times on some long uphill bits. By warm I mean half-way on the temp scale (no...

Interior lights won't turn off, doors won't lock

Little bit more info. The lights do turn off when locked with the key, but lights will not turn off in drive. I'm just gonna pull the relay while driving and put it back when I lock the car so the alarm doesn't complain for now, and I'll pull the BCM and play with the relays tonight.

Interior lights won't turn off, doors won't lock

Hey guys, I've had a problem where my interior lights will stay on past the timer, but they will turn off when put in drive (with lock doors in drive option on), and they will turn off when you lock the car. Basically they were somehow linked to the doors being locked or unlocked. They would...

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

Yeah.. think I might look at a new car, to be honest. If it was just the motor I'd do it, but it's the heater core, the tyres, the stereo and everything else that will add up to a very expensive bill. :(

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

Damn. If anything it's the opposite. It sounds quieter when cold opposed to hot.

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

True, which is why I asked a mechanic and an engine place. They all said the same sort of thing. I'm located in north Brisbane, but am happy to travel (as long as it's within 6 hours one way I will do it!).

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

Hey guys, me again. I went to super cheap the other day to enquire about the potential exhaust leak, got the guy to have a listen. Straight away, that's your bottom end. That's not lifters. Got it booked in at Holden for Tuesday, but had opinions from a local mechanic and engine place. They...

    Knocking noise

If it is indeed only knocking when the AC is on it sounds like the compressor is starved for oil. You might have had a leak somewhere where refrigerant and oil has been leaking from. Throw some leak dye in to check this. Sadly it sounds like your compressor is toast. It's easy as to replace...

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

My mistake. Was pretty tired and confused big end bearing with cam bearing. But yeah, 15-50 or even 15-60 would do ok?

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

Thanks guys, starting to get a little more confidence, haha. I'd still like to check the bottom end out, juuuuust in case. Want to rule it out completely, if only for my own peace of mind. Still have a couple of questions though... I suppose one thing that is concerning me a bit is that the...

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

So you think it's the lifters based on the video? As for me being mechanically minded... I've only been working on cars for 6 months or so but I have already played major parts in rebuilding a 300ZX and a Prelude. As for doing lifters, I'm keen on that, but would want to make bloody damn sure...

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

I hope you're right. I think you're right... to my relatively untrained ears, it doesn't really sound like it's coming from the bottom of the motor. It sounds like it's coming from the valvetrain. I might pull the drivebelt off tomorrow to isolate all that stuff. As I mentioned earlier, the guy...

    Repco returns on installed parts?

Hey guys, sorry I haven't had a chance to respond sooner, been busy with life stuff. I'm probably going to just live with the mounts for now, when I can be bothered changing them again, I will, and I'll flog these ones off for cheap. I will concede that I am my own worst enemy sometimes, I'm...

Camshaft bearing? I bloody hope not.

Hey guys, bit of a conundrum here. Have been servicing my VY Calais 3.8 perhaps not so religiously, as in the goal was every 5,000 but have sometimes let that slip, but no more than 10 or 11. Car has 180k. Basically what one of my friends dismissed as lifter noise and that "all ecotecs do it"...

    Repco returns on installed parts?

Hey guys, just a bit curious. Just did engine mounts on my VY V6, and one of my failings as an individual is impatience, and since my local Holden dealer almost never has anything I ask for in stock, I head to Repco. Kinda bit me this time. Bought some Kelpro brand mounts and at $90 a throw...

    Good panel shop in Brisbane?

So I've scraped an illegally parked car and am looking for a good panel shop in Brisbane, as I have no idea. My insurance recommended Mick Young smash repairs but a cursory google has painted a less than ideal picture of them, so am keen to avoid (they also quoted me $3,000). Someone else...

How to - Heater Core Removal and Hoses Photos Thread

Hey guys, My heater core started leaking coolant around the dead pedal area in the pedal box (at least I assume it's the heater core, it stopped when I bypassed it anyway), so I'm thinking about taking on this job that Holden wants $1950 for, but just want to clarify a few things mentioned in...

    Need Help on VYII BCM

As an electronics hobbyist, I can tell you that if you need to replace one relay, you might as well replace all of them. If one is stuffed the others may not always be far behind. Plus circuit boards don't like too many extreme heat cycles, say from a soldering iron - better to only have to do...

    Slight knock after oil change?

Thanks guys. I pissed the oil off today and put a new bottle of 10W-50 full synth back in, happy as Larry. If there is still a knock, it's so slight that I can't distinguish it from regular valvetrain noise, sounds just like before. Crisis averted. As for why I elect to spend so much, honestly...

    Slight knock after oil change?

Thanks. If it is indeed too thin oil, is it strange that it's occurring at 150,000km? And if it is the oil, is it safe to drive it around a bit over the weekend until I can get it to Holden so I can get a second opinion? Cheers

    Rocker cover gaskets 2004 VY

For what it's worth, I bought a set of Platinum rocker cover gaskets when I did mine. They are ####ing ****. Had to use half a tube of gasket sealer to get the bastards to not flop around everywhere. Will be getting GM next time.

    Slight knock after oil change?

I'm really hoping I haven't screwed something up, and I'm also really hoping that I noticed it before I set off on a 1000km drive that morning I did the oil change. Basically my VY 3.8 NA with 153k on the clock seems to have a slight knock on the passenger side bank. I didn't notice it until I...

VY II Calais AC blend door issues (possibly)

Hey guys, loving my Calais, but there are a few things that are concerning me that may be totally normal, but want to run past peeps in case something is up. All relate to the aircon. 1. Occasionally when more engine power is needed, it will click the compressor off for a few seconds. The...

Installing VY Smokers Kit Power Socket?

Thanks guys. I'll have a play around soon. Does anyone know what the plug is called and if I can get one at Jaycar? I really don't mean to sound snarky or anything, but why? Apart from maybe a different socket design, which will not be an issue as I'll be wiring in one of these or similar, I...

    Water leak

If it's water and not coolant, check the evaporator drain hose. I'm not sure in Commodores, but in pretty much every other car, water leaking into the passenger footwell means an evap drain. The water is coming from the evaporator operating (which is normal) which when the hose is clogged, gets...

Servicing newbie: 10W-50 full synth ok to use on Ecotec?

Thanks again guys, you're all an awesome help. I'm gonna sound basic and hopeless right now, but I can't get the bloody sump plug out. I've bought a breaker bar and am going to try it properly tomorrow (tonight was just making sure it fit, seems a bit iffy, but I also had no light by the time...

    Engine mount nuts

If you've let the engine mounts completely fail, there is a risk of the alloy sump hitting the subframe, but you'd probably know this if that was the case as it would make a rather nice noise. Otherwise, should be fine. While you're there, I would do all three mounts.

VY 03 Digital speedo like VZ

Yeah, I'd like to know this, too. Another way to get to it is by going into engineering mode, by holding mode and set down as you turn the ignition on, but there are a couple of caveats, and I'm wondering if the Tech 2 tool can resolve these caveats: -it only works for that drive, if you want...

Hey guys, thought I'd show off my first car. Got it just under 3 weeks ago with 142,000km on it and I get my P's in a month, have just completed my logbook. Looking forward to driving this more often soon! I'll get some decent photos soon enough, after I give it a proper detail...
