Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Hey just a follow up on this one. I did the tensioner and timing chain last weekend. It took about 8-9 hours over friday-saturday, wasn't the easiest job i've done but i didn't hit any major snags. It sounds much better now firing it up in the mornings. I took the gear off the balance shaft...

Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Yea wow watching it again i'm hearing what you guys are talking about, definately sounds like a sucking noise, i didn't even notice that standing in front of it though. It's the grindy noise i'm worried about. So many squeeks and banks and clunks these days it makes it a bit difficult. With the...

Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Well i took another video this morning with the intake on when it was cold: https://youtu.be/fYq8ox8otw4 Listening to the video, that's pretty much how it sounds, dont' think it's distortion :p I called repco today, a chain/sprocket kit is $205, a gasket kit is $55. I understand why...

Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Haha people have been giving me the "ditch it" advice for years now, but I'm stubborn and love this car so i want to keep it running as long as i can. Wozza, those symptoms you describe are exactly what's happening: noise quite when revved then noisy as throttle is closed. It grumbles loudly at...

Raspy noise from V6 when cold

Hey guys, I've had a problem with the old girl for a few months now. It's had a pretty bad raspy sound coming from the engine when i start it in the mornings, it was particularly bad through cold mornings in winter. Recently it's been getting worse and is happening any time the car's been off...

Depressurising system running lpg and petrol?

Under the bonnet. "15A F/Pump" is written on the fuse panel cover above the fuse on my car. It's the far left fuse when standing in front of the car. I remove the fuse, and not the relay when i'm doing this. With the car running, pulling the fuse results in the car dying in about 3 seconds, i...

    How to replace headgasket v6

    which engine?

Well reading this thread is the first time I've personally heard of this "balance shaft gear", but here's my guess: this "balance shaft" will have been designed to do exactly what it's name says - to offset vibrations/oscillations/roughness in the crank and cam shafts. Without it operating...

    which engine?

Nope not hard at all, this is one of the easiest things you can do on this car. Step 1: take a photo with your phone so you remember which way the belt goes back on. Step 2: get a socket or spanner onto the idler pulley (between power-steering and alternator), rotate it counter-clockwise to...

How much pressure would you expect from fuel pump?

OK thanks for the replies lads, I guess it's pretty likely that the pump is munted. I'll take the pump out and put it in a bucket and see how it goes, that's a good idea! Cheers!

How much pressure would you expect from fuel pump?

You're probably right about the injectors needing a bit of a clean, but i've had the rail out and they all squirt properly when i turn the engine over so i don't think they're the cause of THIS problem. I guess what i'm asking is, can i diagnose the pump as being the cause of the problem by...

How much pressure would you expect from fuel pump?

Hey guys, so i'm trying to diagnose a problem with the old VN. It's running great(ish) on LPG, but barely running at all - missing and spluttering and carrying on when run on petrol. Doing a bit of troubleshooting has led me to look at the fuel system. I pulled off the fuel filter today, and...

    VN Commodore Glovebox broken

well, it looks like the prongs have broken out of the latching mechanism, that's an easy fix with a new glove box from the wreckers. Just clear out the box, prize out the black plastic pin in the back right corner with a screwdriver, then wiggle the tray out remembering there's another fixed...

    Another crank angle sensor

i think the above is true for s2 vn in MOST cases. I ordered the vn s2/vp/vr sensor off ebay, (the bigger black plastic one) but when i pulled the old one off my car it turned out i had the smaller white plastic, alloy bracket s1 variant. My car is definately a series 2. Check the table on this...

Highest Kilometre VP and what have you had to do to it?

haha yep, done the same in mine, great conversation piece, that and the fact that i do all of my body work repairs with a house brick :D 435k on my v6 VN series 2, 5 speed. Done all the little things, Inlet manifold gasket being the biggest job. The moon is 384 000km away, that's a 768k round...

    Write off or not?

how much can that stuff really cost at a good wreckers? if it were me i'd consider trying to fix it myself, i've been youtubing up how to change shocks over the last few days, and have just an hour ago finished changing the tie rod/tension rod bushes and it looks time consuming but really...

Changing Fuel Pressure Regulator VN SS

I don't know how the v8 differs to the 6, but the first thing to do would be to pop the vacuum line off and see if it's got fuel in it (diaphragm busted). That would be causing the engine to flood when it's turned off resulting in a hard start

Vn loosing brake fluid but no leaks

well if u'r putting it in that often it's got to be coming out somewhere... If it were me, i'd park it somewhere after a drive where you'll be able to see the stuff on the ground, and stand real hard on the brakes, then try and find where it's dumping the stuff.

    show us your VN modifications

The greatest mod you can do to a VN: Rotate passenger windscreen squirter nozzle 90 degrees. Peg off the driver's side tube. Run a wire to a switch (i use the redundant antenna up down switches above hazard switch) from the squirter motor. HOURS of entertainment! :D :D

vn S1 manual backfires on gas constantly

I would say that you are close. This is how i see it: The problem arises because of poor ignition with this wasted spark setup. Wasted spark means, as you say, with 3 coils and 6 cylinders, when one cylinder is firing at TDC on the compression stroke, another is firing at near TDC on the exhaust...

vn S1 manual backfires on gas constantly

I've had LPG on my '91 series 2 vn v6 with the 5 speed for about 4 years now. It ran great for 6 months.... then it started with the backfiring. The next 2 years i just learned to live with it. Changed the plugs multiple times, 2 sets of brand new coil packs, new leads, but nothing really...

    need help!]

well it wouldn't be injectors if it's playing up on lpg too, has to be something that's common to both. I'd probably start checking ignition coz that's easiest to do. U'r plugs look ok? measure leads with ohm meter for 10-20k resistance? Corrosion on the DFI module pins that the coil packs sit...

    VP gearbox speedo sensor?

Hey i was under the car a weekend or two ago and happened to take a photo of mine. It's leaking oil, i think there must be an o-ring or something that's stuffed on it. So if u can see through the muck and grot and grease and piss that's it :p it's on the drivers side a far way back from the...

    Intermittent misfire on VP

this is only a small thing, but if you're playing around with coil packs, take a close look at the contacts on the DFI module (the bit the coil packs plug onto). I'm on LPG and had constant backfiring problems for like 2 years (backfiring on lpg is caused by intermittant misfires). Anyway, my...

found a small hole in extractors

Hey guys, I've had a couple of problems with the vn for a few months now. I've had a ticking noise coming from the engine when i accelerate at low rpm, i've also been getting a fair bit of vibration when i really plant in in first gear. The old girl's done 405k now so i was thinking it's...

    battery light

I had my battery light solid on a couple of years ago There's a fuse link wire coming off (i think) the +'ve battery terminal to the cable that goes to the alternator. That was just old and crappy and was resulting in the battery not charging. Was an easy fix in the end. Might not be u'r...

    PCV valve on Series 2?

hey thanks for the quick reply delco. I'm pretty amateur with all this, and don't wanna break anything undoing the wrong thing. Could u tell me where with reference to these couple of pics? is it this big one? I've popped the alternator out to make things a bit easier, and yea, i know my...

    PCV valve on Series 2?

hey guys, so i'm trying to diagnose my LPG backfiring issues at the moment. She's not running the best on petrol, so thats obviously the best place start looking. I'm currently thinking there might be an air leak somewhere, have been checking all the vacuum lines etc. Now i'm looking for the...

    alternator (i think) problem

so i've just got back from the auto electrician now. Tried another alternator and no go, turned out that the "fusable link wire" coming off the battery was corroded, basically ripped appart in his hand, so replaced that and she's all good. Apparently if that's not connected the regulator won't...

    alternator (i think) problem

ahh alright, guess i'll just take it to an auto electrician tomorrow then and see what he says. Don't really wanna risk driving to wreckers and having it run outa juice if it's not that, even if it is more than likely. And yea, tested at the red plug and it's 11.8, so doing nothing, very...

    alternator (i think) problem

Hey guys, so i noticed my battery indicator came on on the dash today, so i've just been having a dig around trying to find out what's going on. With the car running i'm measuring 11.8V at the battery, so the alternator is obviously not charging at all. Measuring from the big positive...
