Mine is metallic silver and yes you see the difference. It may be more obvious with metallic colours as my red VX (non metallic) was ok but my VT with metallic was a slightly different. One wonders whether they spray the bumpers at a different time and fit them later.

Given your initial problem and later issues I would suggest a compression check would be worth while if you haven't done one already and ensure all cyclinders are close to the same reading both warm, cold, wet and dry to confirm gasket and heads are sealed and values and rings are ok...
