Ok that makes sense. So yeah pretty much any repair sufficient to get the car going again won't take 56hrs unless a SH trans can't be found.

Be interesting to see how the OP gets on now.

That made me laugh…

Hope you get to the bottom of it and it ain’t exy :)
It’s a 5L40E so off to the wreckers with it. Far too expensive to repair a 5L40E and not worth it unless the car is pristine or has some sentimental value.

Rebuild wise or even replacement transmission wise?

I would think the man hours to rebuild a 4L60 5L60e or some other box are comparable. So is it that the 4L60 5L60e use special rare expensive parts or is it that there aren't many places that know them well enough to rebuild them?

Just what is it with the 4L60 5L60e that makes them expensive to rebuild?

get a mobile mechanic to service the 5l40e

I got quoted “about $6k“ for a rebuild of my 5L40E in my old SV6. Seeing as that’s about what the whole car was worth I let it go.

Finding a second hand transmission is also a struggle as so few VEs had them. Only the up spec models in the series one VE had them (and some VZs) so second hand ones aren’t a dime a dozen either.

Well going from others comments on here (@Fu Manchu for one) they are difficult to rebuild. He got one rebuilt and it failed again in a year or two IIRC.

For a rebuild to fail again in short order suggests it’s a PITA to rebuild correctly and you’re probably paying for their rebuild failures within the warranty period.

4L60e or 5l40e? 4L60e was about $1,400-$1500 to overhaul about 3-4 years ago.

5L40e is the gold plated lump of aluminium I’m not impressed with. Well, I’m not impressed with the automotive industries skills rebuilding them. Put it that way.

I think the TC itself fails in them and then the shards grenade the gearbox?
