A current thread title on ‘wheel weights’ reminded me of a question which I thought might have my answer until I saw it was addressing a totally different context.
Our black edition ute is probably getting close to needing a wheel balance check. I’ve never owned black rims before but was always annoyed by the glue residue that was left behind on my silver rims when the wheels were ever balanced. I take a lot of pride in keeping my cars clean and have just accepted that the rims can be gleaming silver but closer inspection shows rectangles of discolouration/muck where weights have been removed.
Now with the OEM black rims:
1. Will any of the black gloss colouring come off when weights are removed (maybe a silly question but I have no idea on how these rims are coated)
2. When I had the ute opticoated, for a bit extra they coated the outer surfaces (ie did not take the rims off) with a product as well - it certainly has made the rims easy to clean/keep clean & shiny. I can understand that where old weights are removed then the surface would not be protected but I would hope the black is not scratched/damaged which takes me back to question 1 again. Has anyone had experience with such coatings on rims?
3. Are the rims easily scratched or likely to be scratched by the tools used by the fitters?
So then, any stories of experience appreciated...as with any suggestions on what to instruct the tyre fitters (I usually go to Bridgestone) so that I can expect my shiny, gloss back rims to remain in A1 condition after they have been tampered with?? (Not much point having a whinge to them when it is too late, I figure).
Cheers in advance!
