PROBLEM SOLVED!

It was not the BCM, had nothing to do with the PIM and had nothing to do with the PCM not receiving the correct code.

So despite all of the research pointing towards the PCM shutting everything down because it had not received the correct code from the PIM it turned out to be the crank angle sensor.

The solution was not provided by the new scan tool, that finally turned up today, the answer (we the directions of where to look) were provided by one of Son 2's (mechanic by trade) mates. His mate did his time at Holden and told us to look at the crank angle sensor. He advised that it will not "throw a code" but the PCM will send a no start signal and cut fuel and ignition timing if it does not know the position of the crank.

Threw the scanner on and checked the live data with it cranking and could not get anything. Put it up on the hoist, ripped out the starter motor bolts to access the connector for the crank angle sensor. It was connected - gave it a tug to check it was home and it came apart. Cleaned it with brake cleaner and dried it off. Reconnected it - starter motor back in. Dropped it to the ground, climbed in through the window and turned the key.

Started first kick!

Idle was rough and very rich.

Connected up the CAI, added the IAT sensor and filled the radiator with coolant. Restarted him and the idle cleaned up over about three minutes, bled the cooling system, clutch and threw Jimi's interior back together.

So put this one in the little black book. The crank angle sensor does not throw a code but the PCM will throw a theft deterrent code and shut down the the fuel circuit, the ignition circuit and cut the serial data bus.

Thank you to everyone who provided thoughts, guidance and support.

So just to finalise this thread,

VZ BCM with working key has been linked to the VY PIM/PCM. The only issue is that the Tech 2 doesn't recognise the BCM as being compatible with the VY. If the Tech 2 is loaded as a VZ - no problems.

The Vident scanner doesn't care about the BCM it recognises it and was able to link the PIM and PCM no problems.

I did not need to get a key for the VY BCM so I haven't tried the Vident scanner for cloning keys - but I will.
