Why on earth do they cut the shim off halfway up the piston!

So the OEM pads are Ferodo?
They must be a lot harder than the rotors, as my rotors are 'worn to limits', but the pads have plenty of life left...

I had the dealer claiming that my rotors were totally f*cked and in need of immediate replacement at about 40,000 km. They reckoned they couldn’t be left until the next service and need to be booked in immediately (at multiple $1,000s). I was a bit shocked and taken back. So, I checked myself. The rotor wear at that point was a smidge less than 50%. I put in a new set of pads while I was there (but they too were only about 50% worn). I figured that I’d do rotors and pads at the next pad change,

I noticed the rear brembo ceramic pads and a few other brands have what appears to be anti squeal shims attached. Is everyone still putting the holden ones in as well when using pads with shims attached or leaving them out?

If the replacement pads have shims, I use those. If not, I’d reuse the existing ones (if they are detachable).

I also use ‘brake grease’ as well to help prevent squealing.

Thanks for the info.

So, um, what is the need for the counter weights? Surely they wouldn't be there if no use

They’re not so much ‘counter weights’ (implying that they ‘balance’ something), they are there to help prevent the squealing, so I’m guessing that they change the resonant frequency or somehow help with the damping. I don’t think they are actually required at all in terms of braking - and pads can be purchased without the weights.
