Well when I lived up there a Cyclone was a yearly threat. When you see so many of them and get so many storms up there you just tend to think #### it.

That plus theyve just gone through the floods, I imagine the thinking is well we didn't leave for that and we just saved our houses im not leaving now.

Id be ####ing out of there though. We were up there for Larry and that was pretty intense this is going to be nothing like it.

Meh, David Koch. Hopefully Cyclone Yasi smashes his glasses, slips up on his shiny head, and quickly heads back out to sea in disgust! Typical bloody channel 7 "heroes". If those fools kill themselves then boo hoo, it's all the unfortunate residents i'll be worrying about.

It's now bigger and more intense and moving slower than HC Katrina. Which means more destructive. And given the category 5 part (winds up to 320kph) is 500km across (basically the size of Tassie) the time left to evacuate far enough is only a couple of hours. By about 2 - 3pm today, you won't have enough time to guarantee you'll be safely evacuated. #### knows why anyone would be staying with the amount of warning that's been given...

I'm not worryed about them. In fact I couldn,t give a rats arse if the cyclone gets the ########s. Australia would be a smarter place without them. Umm Kosh ect that is. For those who have to be there my thoughts are with you.

You're spot on, but i suppose it's something only the locals (particularly those who've seen it before) up there would appreciate. Problem is there hasn't really been a "before" as this sucker will be the worst/most destructive Queensland cyclone in history. So yes i agree staying seems illogical, but it's their call. Good luck to them & let's hope they all survive.

That's the problem - complacency... The attitude of "ah it's just another one... she'll be right"

NO IT'S NOT AND NO SHE WON'T!!!

Look at it another way... If it were approaching Tasmania, there would be NOWHERE on the island you'd be guaranteed of being safe. Just look at it...

I just saw these weather stats on the BOM website (Bureau of Meteorology - Home Page) about Willis Island (off the coast at Cairns etc) which the eye of Yasi is right over the top of now. The winds "only" got up to 141km/h with 185km/h gusts, but i bet the other side of the eye wall is stronger. Also look at the length of calm conditions - that thing's eye must be wide.

Our house was built about 7 years ago, and was built to withstand a cat 5 should it ever happen.

A lot of the worry should be for any old Queenslanders homes, and the like. We saw a lot of residents making their way to the evactuation locations earlier, mainly the shopping centres.

Anyways, i've got the camera all set up and ready, and i've been taking half hourly updates with footage so when it's played back you can see the time frame and build up as it hits, and if and when possible, throughout the cyclone.

An extract from here...

How destructive can cyclones be?

It depends how quickly they are moving and how deep they are. If you have ventral pressure that continues to be created within the tropical cyclone down to about 850 hectopascals, they can be incredibly destructive.

The storm surge, or massive wall of water, that can come out can be akin to a tsunami. It is not just flooding, it is the actual force of the water that is moving at very high speeds as we have seen in southern Queensland, and that can do enormous amount of damage. It is not just the winds, it is what it can do to the top layer of the ocean if conditions are right.

For example, Cyclone Larry made landfall in far north Queensland in 2006 with wind gusts reaching 240 kilometres-an-hour, damaging more than half the homes in Innisfail and leaving a repair bill of $1.5 billion. The weather bureau is now predicting Tropical Cyclone Yasi will be at least twice the diameter of Larry.

Category four Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin on Christmas Eve in 1974 with winds of up to 217kph and killed 71 people. Tracy caused more than $800 million in damage and destroyed about 80 per cent of homes.

Seriously... GTFO!!!
