This really is ****! How big is the active JC community? Could we "pass the cup around" to help him at least get his car back on the road? I.e. get the necessary mechanical repairs done.

Good idea, but when I first joined JC, the offer of help I provided left me with a sour taste in my mouth....I hope a similar situation doesn't crop again in this instance

I disagree, how reliable is sending an unregistered letter to their customer, informing them of an insurance policy being cancelled?? An insurance policy cancellation is a HUGE deal for them and for me. For them as they are losing money from me not paying, and for me I am driving around without cover. ALL my other direct debit arrangements, call me as soon as a payment is missed... YOUI, Red Cross, Gym, Lease etc. So why is an exeption. AAMI said they sent me 2-3 letters about my direct debits failing (and I have 2 of those, and all they say is that my payment has been declined and to ensure funds are in by such and such a date) but I NEVER got a letter informing me of a cancellation. Why couldn't they have sent the cancellation letter by registered mail and therefore that way they know I've received it???

You have just agreed with me, without you realising it....They didn't send it registered mail....they are claiming they sent it snail mail....

So if it was a legal requirement, it would be sent registered mail, not snail mail, so they had proof it was received....Law requires proof

So it boils down to slack service on behalf of AAMI....which does suck for the OP

This raises a good point. Any legal document I sent. Including summons, contract negotions, letter of demands etc. MUST have been sent by registered mail.

I dont know how binding that is seeing as speeding fines arrive via regular snail mail. But if you raise your case with a supervisor or someone a little more senior and ask them, why wasnt a document essentially canceling my insurance sent via registered mail? Ask them if you can back pay the monthly balances and go from there.

Little left of field regarding fines in the mail....if you don't receive them, you have recourse whereby you can appeal the fine total,if extra charges have been applied, so it reverts back to the original cost. This is in S.A, so it may not apply in all states.

I would call a solicitor , one that specialises in insurance claims and see if they have any advice. They would know what your rights are in this situation.

Financial Ombudsman, ACCC are best ports of call once if AAMI come back unfavourably. I took AAMI to the Ombudsman 3 years ago and they backed down straight away.
