cold start rattle is pretty normal our built one does it when its sat long enough to drain all the oil back out the lifters with big spring pressure doesnt help that they fire up so fast compared to a carby v8.thats why vl's used to be bad for doing bigends cause they started faster than you could let the key go

Holden V8's are a ticking time bomb when it comes to oiling, they have been for decades.

There is NOTHING in the top end that uses oil pressure, it's all in the bottom end, cam, crank, rods...

the spings get cooled with oil pressure.
the rockers get lubricated with it

....

*shrug* i dunno what im saying, just being difficult.
I think he means the top end is 'splash lubricated' where as the bottom end is pressure lubricated

A new development, couple times today, put the foot down and it completely died, had to let it cruise in angel gear, let it drop back to idle then it was fine again. Do wait until the mechanic does a few tests next week or should I just replace the fuel reg now? Only thing I haven't changed.

I had a similar problem with the caprice, turned out the fuel gauge was reading quarter when empty.

clamp the return line and see if the rpm changes.
I'm assuming that's the sign of a buggered fuel regulator??
As I just tried your advice and my idle improved drastically,
as tim also states above in his post.
