Ignition systems normally break down under-load as its a lot harder to ignite the spark plug, your complaint is light throttle applications????. So the correct initial timing, mechanical & vacuum advance is critical. If you have access to a vacuum gauge check the value @ idle.

I'm leaning towards a carb fault, the 2 screws that hold the aluminium body to the metal base always use to come loose & bugger the gasket.

I'd be thinking ignition side of things if still got old points setup.

Old strommies were good just tap with screwdriver to dislodge crud & good to go as long as no fuel/air leaks lol

Old fuel?
Engine condition?

You might be surprised at the difference changing out HT leads can make, even if they look fine from the outside.

This is actually a vc with a red head and single strommie and electronic ignition.Would the 8psi fuel pressure be causing trouble?
Missing/stumble is worse when cold.....
I'll try swapping out coil n leads though.

Fuel pressure should be 7 PSI maximum with a carb.....

Replace the distributer cap and Ht leads and see what the results are

That's the million dollar question mate, the thing is that there is a breakdown along the lead and you can try to isolate them from each other.
What I have done is cut up bits of rubber hose and where the leads touch stick it there, you might need more than one.
Best to run the car at night in complete darkness and you'll soon see where the problem/s are.

I think bending the leads or getting oil petrol on them is no good.

Get some new leads. Silicone ones.

The original leads on red motors were made from carbon, and were prone to cracking causing the exact symptoms you've described. It is unlikely that you have a set of these on there... but in any case, that's where I'd start.

These ones are $25:

8mm silicone. They'll do nicely.
