well im currently studying at mta as a motor apprentice and there is a fellow classmate that works for a performance mob he said that they have had up to 40kw gains on car running e85(110 octane) i asked what difference it would make running 98ron he said significant and he cant lye because he does alot of dyno tuning street cars, race cars, rally cars, drift cars thats my 2 cents but i will say if your going from 91-98 theres is a ****in difference the computer edit's spark not combustion if the **** burns better you get more boom = more power, more efficientcy, more response, better idle and less pinging

40kw gain from just using a higher octane rated fuel like e85(110) is in my opinion bull$hite I'm not saying it's not possible but you would need something like a 800+rwhp v8 to get that kind of gain.

A few years ago normal unleaded was a good fuel now it is crap.
On the odd occasion I fill up with normal unleaded the car runs like crap.

I think you'll find its with a tune. There was a article in SC mag about tuning for E85. The benefit alone isn't that great but there's extra power to be had if tuned properly compared to a car tuned to run 98RON.
Maybe word things better next time

of course with a tune, a standard car will be running way too lean on e85.

How long have people been using alcohol based fuels in racing. And some people here STILL can't grasp its benifits???
Stunning to say the least....

Always ran my car on premium, was a bit light on cash but needed to get home, put in half a tank of regular and suddenly the car is pinging of it's head...

Can't see why it would ping, merly because you used 91ron.
The ignition tables would be tuned so that it wouldn't be advanced far enough to cause pre-detonation. This is, provided it's a factory tune.

Only reason the car would Benifit from a higher octane is because the ECU is able to advance the timing. Even then i don't think the Ecotec ECU has the ability to detect pre-detonation.
