Sorry, is like Raj said, per US Gallons. We do enjoy cheaper fuel prices, now, our current admin via pressie's speech hole, wants to impose a$10 per barrel tax to keep financing the socialist way, so called clean energy.

Back on the topic of tax and cars. ThecJapanese are building trucks in the USA to avoid the Chicken Tax. Talk about old and dumb laws.

They told me my 84 Jaguar was galvanised before painting. Mine must have been done on a friday afternoon 5 minutes before knock-off

I will not pay $70,000 USD for a Tesla, but $250,000 AUD (considering current exachange rate 11/Feb/16) is ####ing insane.

Good article; you guys pay way too much for a set of wheels. Anywau just on the side. I saw fuel station selling at $1.19 USD. How much you guys pay for fuel?
Your price is per gallon...yes?
Aussie pricing is per litre.

1 US gallon = 3.78 Litres
Where I live we currently pay $1.20/Litre for 91 octane unleaded petrol

$1.20 x 3.78 = $4.53 per gallon (Australian dollars)

My comment was about some of the savings quoted in the OP, most of which were around the $10k mark. Is it worth it for $10k as a percentage of the price of the vehicles they were comparing ? IMO no. $10k on a sub $50k car ? Possibly

Yeah, I don't really understand how they calculated the numbers in the article I posted, I actually found it a little confusing and wonder if there really be any financial benefits, for one individual to import one vehicle, when you factor in time/effort/paper work etc
Unless it's a luxury type vehicle and you can save at least 20k +

A brand new, max spec Tesla Model S P90D will cost around $244,000 to import from the UK into Australia, including all local taxes – that same car to buy in Australia will be just over $254,000. And that’s one of the closer comparisons.
This hardly seems worth the effort for a 10k saving (3.9%)
I'm sure I could work the local dealer for a 3.9% discount and they do all the importing and paper work hassles
(not that I'm anywhere near that buyer price bracket..lol)

From your article link:
The move is likely to benefit a small fraction of Australia's 1.1 million new car buyers, with wealthy luxury car owners and niche enthusiasts set to benefit most from the changes that allow consumers to source new or second-hand cars and motorcycles from foreign markets as long as they meet strict requirements.

But as above, the Tesla P90D would be considered luxury enthusiast level vehicle, at around a quarter million freakin dollars...but only providing a 3.9% discount compared to local dealer buy

Yes is per gallons. Last time we paid 4 bucks for a gallon of 87 octanes fuel was when the oil price was pube over $100 USD per barrel. How much was back then?

The most recent peak in oil price was mid 2008

91 ULP was around $1.60/litre in Oz (regional pump price)

So would have been AU$6.04 / gallon

Historical pricing - fuel pricing

Seems to me the government is trying to give the impression of making cars cheaper while in fact doing very little. You will only be able to import cars under a year old or over 25 years old. If they were serious about making cars cheaper they would allow a greater range of imports. Se the current vested interests have had some influence.

You do realize that the Australian car market is the most competitive on the planet with more brands and models here than anywhere else. Anybody can import pretty much anything they like (not sold OE in Australia) however the stumbling block is getting it to comply with ADR's for registration and I for one am entirely fine with that.

Competitive in terms of makes and models not price. What's the point of importing a car that does not comply with ADRs.
