With clunking that bad i wouldnt even bother trying a repair on the bottomend.but i would pull the intake off and make sure the balance shaft hasnt snapped if the sound is not it the bottom of the engine

The same thing happened to mine. Was going down a steep hill and when I went to accelerate again the knocking just started all of a sudden and it couldn't even maintain 100km/h.

Turned out to be a spun bearing and the piston hitting the head. Mines also on gas, but my driving was probably more the issue lol.

Got another engine and box from the wreckers with warranty including all bolt ons for $370 and put it in. Was all good for 10km till it blew a head gasket....

Finally got the sump off - no small effort without a hoist. Not a visible spec of metal in there and all the big ends seem to be firm. None of them seem to have any play in the direction of the piston however one of them has maybe 0.5mm of side to side slack - would that be an issue?

I would suspect valve damage

I dont reckon its dull enough for main or big end, is it louder on the top of the engine or at the sump?

If it is accompanied by loss of oil pressure then I would assume bearing related.
Does the oil light come on or flicker at idle?

Oil light flickers at the traffic lights on idle once its been running a while but disappears as soon as the car starts moving.

Definitely a bearing then if your not getting oil pressure at idle and combined with that bad knocking sound, it all points to bearings.

Sorry to say but the motors shot.
